Acid Reflux Medicine May Cause Osteoporosis

Stomach acid–blocking proton pump inhibitor drugs—PPIs with brand names like Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Protonix, and AcipHex—appear to significantly increase the risk of bone fractures.

I recently gave a webinar on osteoporosis. We’ll post the recording in a few weeks, so stay tuned for that. 25 Risposte a “Acid Reflux Medicine May Cause Osteoporosis”

  1. I've had knee problems for 33 years now, from a traffic accident. I had a doctor tell me at some point (in 2004) I should take what he called a "miracle drug", which was Vioxx by the way at that time, and take a PPI with it for the stomach. I refused, he said I was being ridiculous and headstrong, he was condescending and rude and had no respect for me as a person who has to deal with chronic pain for the rest of my life and wants to have as much life quality as possible. Right now I feel so vindicated, again, because Vioxx was taken off the market 6 months after he tried to make me take that (because it killed healthy young people!) and now it's not just that PPIs may kill off your microbiome, but that taking these drugs would have actually cost me my knee. I'm glad I'm so ridiculous and headstrong. The wfpb diet I've been following since 2017, thanks to your channel, has greatly improved my knee (less inflammation so less swelling and less pain from the osteoarthritis), and it's improved my mental state as well. Thank you, Dr. Greger. Oh, and I have to add that my doctor back then said that these drugs were "perfectly safe to take for decades". I have no idea where he got that idea, probably made it up, I'm thinking.

  2. Ииии чем убирать изжогу?
Если злаки убрать, то изжоги меньше, но всё же может быть.

  3. I was on them for 14 years, and no one ever said anything, not my GI, not my GP. I finally weaned myself off but still go back for short periods whenever I need OTC NSAIDs for an extended period of time.

  4. My heartburn came from hiatal hernia. The only thing that helped (big surprise) was a whole foods plant based diet, low fat. Cut out the CRAP and grease, more fiber. I lost weight and the heartburn is gone. I did notice a difference right away but it took losing weight for it to be completely resolved. YMMV

  5. I had acid reflux for years and I've long suspected a hiatal hernia as the culprit. My doctor wanted to get me on a PPI (permanently!) so I asked: "Shouldn't we identify the cause of the problem before attempting to treat it?" She said no need, PPI's are easy and get results, so who cares? Needless to say, I did NOT start the PPIs. I already knew about some of the dangers. Instead, I reduced animal product intake to just one or twice a month, eliminated dairy products, reduced my coffee drinking, lost some weight and stopped eating bedtime snacks. Problem solved!

  6. This is so upsetting, I was on a double dose for months, no warning. I read the product labels and warnings, but they did not quote a study saying this med was linked to so many things!

  7. some of the difference by country may be because of the short lifespan in some places, but the dairy consuming countries are at the top for sure. denmark #1

  8. Please tell us what someone can do instead of taking certain acid reflux meds. My teenage son has Crohn’s disease and follows a plant based diet. One of his issues is terrible acid reflux. He has amazing doctors but they all say he’s fine to take prescribed acid reflux meds long term. I was worried and asked and now this video popped up. I would love for you to do a series on IBD and medications.

  9. Would resistance/weightlifting exercises help offset the negative effects of ppis on bone density? Nothing helps my LPR as much as ppis, unfortunately. It's either potentially negative side effects years down the road or risk of developing esophageal cancer.

  10. PPIs are likely overused, especially for transient heartburn. Even so, everything is a tradeoff. I'd probably be long dead of stomach cancer if it weren't for PPIs. Developed severe GERD as a teenager, likely hereditary (My Dad suffers the same) and exacerbated by years of weightlifting. Dietary changes did nothing, and earlier drugs (Tums, H2 blockers, etc.) didn't help much and also had serious side effects, to say nothing of the pain and damage from GERD to teeth and tissue. Endoscopy showed my stomach looked like ulcerated hamburger. Doc said very close to Barrett's Esophagus which often becomes cancerous. Been taking them for decades now, and I thank God for them! Calcium supplementation may help and weightlifting and strength training are always helpful.

  11. 5:20 is a start. Don't want to remove all salt. I use Apple cider vinegar but just a splash, in my water and this helps stomach. Sauerkraut or acv, also known to break up Roundup, allowing more normal glycine in DNA, joints, stomach and brain, to help you sleep, which increases compassion and decreases pain worldwide. The frontal lobe is also helpful in making good decisions instead of short -term loner ones. Goodnight.

  12. Was on one of these for approx 15 years for acid reflux disease and thought it was a miracle drug. Without it I was even immobilized with pain including white foam that would come out of my mouth. Then for weight loss I payed to have a slimband put in. In order to do the operation they had to fix my stomache hernia. Whole operation for both band and stomache hernia took 15 minutes. Never had acid reflux again since! Band was useless for me, but that's another story. Now I live with chronic pain due to wide spread osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. So easy to fix a stomache hernia it's obvious that they don't want to. People trust way too much and are often just stooges for someone else's profit in the end.
