Big Salt- Getting to the Meat of the Matter

Why do the meat industries add salt when millions of lives are at stake?

You can rejuvenate your taste buds, though, if you cut down on foods with added salt/sugar/fat. Check out my video Changing Our Taste Buds (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/changing-our-taste-buds/).

Did I say meat glue? If you have never heard of it, I did a video about it (of course!): Is Meat Glue Safe? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/is-meat-glue-safe/)<br />
The meat industry reaction to salt reminds me of their reaction to the classification of processed meat as a known human carcinogen. See Meat Industry Reaction to New Cancer Guidelines (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/meat-industry-reaction-new-cancer-guidelines/) and The Palatability of Cancer Prevention (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-palatability-of-cancer-prevention/).

Isn’t there controversy as to how bad salt really is for you, though? Here’s the science, decide for yourself:

  2. Great video … this is one reason Minh and I are raw .. we know exactly what's in our food .. Goodness from Nature!, that's what in our food ….. hold the meat glue please.

  3. Hey ☺so I recently switched to sea salt instead of iodized salt.. is it better? I'm a deducted to salt and I know it I've been addicted ever since I could remember I love salt and acidic foods. Do you think I should cut out salt in general or which salt do you recommend? thanks ☺

  4. I know the medical and scientific mainstream views salt as sodium chloride but this is false and misleading information. 'Refined salt' is around 98% sodium chloride with the remaining 2% made up of chemical dessicants like sodium ferrocyanide. Yes this salt is totally useless and unhealthy and it is the main salt sold and added to foods. Real unrefined salt on the other hand is beneficial to health and is 84% sodium chloride with the remaining 16% composed of 60+ minerals making it one of natures finest sources of such a large amount of trace minerals. Of course, like anything, too much is unhealthy but there is a profound difference between refined and unrefined salt and this should be understood and explained by someone as statistically observant as dr greger.

  5. Everyone is different. I ride my bike a lot, and my body needs a lot of salt and liquids. Without it I cramp up like crazy after long rides. My blood pressure is very low, my resting heart rate is 49 bpm. I'm also vegan.

  6. Sea salt is better than table salt, by a wide margin. In contrast to refined table salt, most sea salt is naturally harvested and dried in the sun, and contains a wealth of trace minerals and electrolytes that are easily assimilated by your body. Unlike refined salt which contains only 2 or 3 elements, sea salt contains about 80 mineral elements (potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium and more) that are essential in small amounts for a variety of functions in the body. These mineral salts and electrolytes are key players in enzyme production as well as immune system, adrenal and thyroid function. And while, compared to food, sea salt is not a major source of minerals, like any whole food, sea salt has a natural balance and a lack of toxic
additives, so we are actually nourished by it, rather than depleted.

According to Dr. F. Batmanghelidj in his book, Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: Salt is most effective in stabilizing irregular heartbeats and, contrary tothe misconception that it causes high blood pressure, it is actually essential for the regulation of blood pressure—in conjunction with water. Naturally, the proportions are critical. Salt is vital to the extraction of excess acidity from the cells in the body, particularly the brain cells. Salt is vital for balancing the sugar levels in the blood; a needed element in diabetics. Salt is vital for the generation of hydroelectric energy in cells in the body. It is used for local power generation at the sites of energy need by the cells. Salt is vital for absorption of food particles through the intestinal tract. Salt is vital for the clearance of the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky phlegm,
particularly in asthma and cystic fibrosis. Salt is vital for clearing up congestion of the sinuses. Salt is a strong natural antihistamine. Salt is essential for the prevention of muscle cramps. Salt is vital to prevent excess saliva production to the point that it flows out of the mouth during sleep. Needing to constantly mop up excess saliva indicates salt shortage. Salt is absolutely vital to making the structure of bones firm. Osteoporosis, in a major way, is a result of salt and water shortage in the body. Salt is vital for sleep regulation. It is a natural hypnotic. Salt on the tongue will stop persistent dry coughs. Salt is vital for the prevention of gout and gouty arthritis. Salt is vital for maintaining sexuality and libido. Salt is vital for preventing varicose veins and spider veins on the legs and thighs. Salt is vital to the communication and information processing of nerve cells the entire time that the brain cells work—from the moment of conception to death.

  7. The reality is, everybody's different, and activity levels are different from person to person and for each person from day to day. I don't trust 'doctors' who make sweeping statements about nutrition, they have ulterior motives.

  8. Listen, yes it would cost them money, BUT not profit, the cost would just be passed on to the consumer. As most of these meats are done on an economy of scale, that adds up to not very much when you take into consideration that most of these processed meats are bought with food stamps. The reason they act as if the cost is prohibitive is that they want to act like they are saving you that cost, but the reason is much more insidious, they do it because they can, and always have, and have the political power to do so because the people want it. They vote for it everytime they buy it

  9. (0:31) – Surely if the salt / processed food industry could care less, then that actually means that they do care. (Because they could care less).
I would be much more worried if they couldn't care less.
Anyway, the low salt =- low pressure is a total myth. Just Google: the big salt lie
