How May Plants Protect Against Diabetes?

Protective properties of whole plant foods against diabetes include antioxidants, lipotropes, fiber, and the ability to suppress the estrogen-producing bacteria in our gut.

Plant foods may also protect against diabetes by replacing animal foods. See my last video: Why is Meat a Risk Factor for Diabetes? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/why-is-meat-a-risk-factor-for-diabetes)

So what if your entire diet was filled with plants? See Plant-Based Diets and Diabetes (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/Plant-Based-Diets-and-Diabetes). Some plants may be particularly protective: <br />• Amla versus Diabetes (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/amla-versus-diabetes/)

  1. I was wondering which is safer for females, a vegan diet but supplemented with a whey protein shake, or a fully vegan diet plus a soy based protein shake? I'm not lactose intolerant, and keep hearing that soy can increase estrogen.

  2. @Michaela Dove Can't answer you directly, maybe you'd want to change your settings. Soy protein is not the best option. Not because of the estrogen, it's a form of estrogen that doesn't influence the hormones in the body, but it raises IGF 1 which plays a role in cancer growth. Whey protein is no better though. I would recommend pea protein. You could also use rice or hemp protein.

  3. NutritionFacts.org  Dear Dr. Greger, I found a few videos on IBS on your website, but I wonder if there's bigger (reliable) research on IBS + veganism. I don't know much about it, but I wonder if it could help if done "correctly" / in a healthy way. Is fiber a problem?
Thank you for your wonderful work! Best wishes from Germany!

  4. My mother was a meat eater, she ate a massive amount of meats, but not much sweets, she was diagnosed with diabetes in her early 40s, she passed away in 2011 at age 58. She suffered many complications from diabetes. My mother had high blood pressure, heart attacks, and her leg amputated under the knee. Her meat and dairy consumption was the main cause. I would test her blood sugar over the years, and it would always spike after she would have her meat and dairy without sweets. She did not eat a lot of refined carbs or sweets, but she loved meat and dairy.

  5. Hey Michaela Dove. There's a lot of evidence against the consumption of milk products, whey included, especially if you're lactose intolerant! Whey is just a by-product of making cheese and really isn't good for you. As for soy, there's evidence for and against it. There's even evidence saying it's really good for you, which is what I believe. Bu regardless of what you think of soy, keep in mind that anything containing animal products (whey) is a whole lot worse. The reason soy is being attacked is because they have "phytoestrogens" which are said to mimic our estrogen in a similar way.Now although I do not not the specifics about phytoestrogen, I do know that animal products have ACTUAL estrogen in them… Not only do animals naturally produce estrogen like ourselves, but they are GIVEN hormones (such a estrogen). So their bodies are LOADED with estrogen, so whatever animal products we eat, we are eating ACTUAL estrogen. And that is not good for us all. Soy products could never be as bad for us as consuming animal hormones. So definitely stay away from the whey.

Also, if you are worried about protein, you do not really need a protein powder, you can easily eat high protein foods. However, if you really want to take protein powders, vegan ones are the best kind to take in regards to your health (:

  6. Marie Joy, it won't let me reply to your comment but I just wanted to recommend you check out Dr. Neal Barnard's work on reversing type 2 diabetes! He has several books and you can even find lots of videos of him on YouTube. Diabetes runs on both sides of my family and I've been considered pre-diabetic for most of my life – until switching to a plant based diet. I'm no longer on the "sugar roller coaster" of highs and lows!
    Good luck!

  7. Dr. Greger do you have any videos on vitamin/mineral supplements and if they are really necessary on a plant based diet? I've "heard" people say that the vitamin and mineral content in our foods is severely lowered because of the poor soil these days. Any truth to that?

  8. IMO, Type 1 is often caused by Leaky Gut – animal protein particles get through the gut, immune system attacks them and sometimes confuses them with pancreatic tissue, attacking the pancreas. Leaky gut is primarily caused by lifestyle factors, mainly eating when stressed & drinking alcohol. Then gluten and animal protein are sustaining factors. People are stressed, get leaky gut, then start eliminating gluten, dairy and all kinds of stuff to manage the symptoms. This is treating the symptom and not the condition at it's finest. As Erik Bakker (candidacrusher) says, don't even change the foods you eat, before addressing lifestyle factors (alcohol, being unhappy, sleep). Food is only one cog in the wheel.

  9. A genetic predisposition for certain diseases exist. Inclusive of environmental factors, mutations exist for specific diseases that may be located upon the sequencing of 20,000-30,000 proteins that could uncover these potential maladies and correct them with medications.
