0: 00 Why measure Insulin Resistance?
0: 50 Gold standard
1: 23 HOMA-IR
2: 43 QUICKI
3: 32 Matsuda
4: 00 TyG
4: 50 Trigs/HDL-C ratio
5: 17 Waist circumference
Great info!
How do A1C levels fit into measuring insulin resistance.
Also, with these tests, would you have your doctor administer them? How would you go about finding your glucose and triglyceride levels for the at home test?
Excellent work as always
Hi, thank you for this information. I have tried the TYG Index with Triglycerides and Glucose, although I am normal in both, why is it that the result suggests I am insulin resistant? Thank you.
Love this! Many thanks for sharing Dr Carvalho. Great that you gave several options as I am more genetically and ethnically prone to skinny diabetes as per my father. So in that context, the last method may not be applicable to me as my waistline is 31”
Roy Taylor stated pancreas regrow to near normal 2 yr after fatty liver & pancreas is lost; those earliest newly diagnosed receive highest reversal remission rates; this points to mean that resistance is chronic & progressive
Thanks for the information. It is a confusing subject at times and now much more clear to me.
Thank You Dr Carvalho for the various methods. QUESTION: Is the TyG index also reflective only of liver insulin resistance?
Tyg link is not found fyi
Where I live it is very difficult to get a test for insulin. Instead, C-peptide is measured. Is it possible to do a similar test for insulin sensitivity with the two variables?
Considering the correlation between waist circumference and insulin resistance is so high maybe you should have started with that Gil?
Diabetes UK put the worrying waist numbers at:
80cm (31.5in) for all women
94cm (37in) for most men
90cm (35in) for South Asian men.
If you have a gut you need to get rid of it! That's the hard part 😂
40 inch waist test is for men if i'm correct for women it's lower….
Great information! My doctor uses LP-IR instead of HOMA-IR. From what I’ve read it seems like it correlates with HOMA-IR, but I’m not sure if it’s considered more accurate or not. Luckily mine seems to be in a great range, but would love to know more about it.
Thanks for listening to the survey doc! Your videos are great. Hola desde España
1:23 Homeostatic* 😂
So HOMA-IR of about 0.3 is good? Can it ever be too low?
What would happen to the lab measurements if you make a longer fast: 24, 48 or 72 hs? Would they make the same result of a 12 h fast?
Super useful! Using the TYG index, it's the first time I got some idea about my insulin resistance. Using my blood test data over the past 10 years, I can see I went from the danger zone to safe numbers after changing my diet to whole foods and low sat fat with intermittent fasting.
However, there is one issue with the TYG index if anybody wants to follow the literature. The online calculators use the formula TYG = ln(glucose*triglycerides)/2 but most (not all) of the research papers use a different formula: TYG = ln(glucose*triglycerides/2). It looks like one source created a typo in the formula, which then propagated. Using the first formula, the normal TYG is a bit above 4, while using the other the normal is above 8.
I request you to make a Video on Choline.
Do Vegans and Vegetarians need to take Choline supplements??
Do high Choline intake increases the chances of Heart Attack??
Why wouldn't it be easier and more cost-effective to monitor postprandial blood sugar levels (at various times), conduct a glucose tolerance test, or measure glycated hemoglobin
If overweight — like many of us – best to assume that you are insulin resistant. ✔️
If someone is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes I am not sure why it is necessarily a lifelong condition.
Risk factors include poor diet, stress, lack of exercise. If one makes these lifestyle changes and gets their
glucose levels in the normal range I would think he is "cured". But Doctors tell me that once Type 2 is diagnosed, it is a lifelong condition.
If you want to know if you're insulin resistant pretty quickly, take off your clothes, stand straight, and look down. Can you see your feet? If not, you have insulin resistance. The ladies might have to lift up their breasts in some cases to see, but pushing your stomach in is not allowed.
The best one according to Peter Attia doesn't even have a name : an OGTT where insulin is also measured
Thanks! Great info! I tested my TYG and my index is 4.38 just under the cutoff of 4.49! It took me a little over one year to reverse my bad habits of eating and drinking, I lost 45 Lbs. and lowered my BP.
I used a low carb diet, One meal a day, Walked every day, lifted some weights 3 times a week, and cut out Sugar and Alcohol to minimum. I am 69 and hope to live a long and healthy Life
all the respect for every effort you're doing Gil
love to see your face and smile
very informative video as usual (keep going 😃 )
you have to know you have a hard core follower from Egypt 😊😊
Wow. TyG is 4.93. I've got work to do.
T2s are often told you want to be under 140 two hours after eating and 120 one hour after eating. Do you know if that jibes with the Matsuda index? I wasn't aware you could have IR and not have it show up in your A1C.
One significant symptom is you never feel full no matter how much you eat
It seems like Tyg index is calculated in two ways or am I just tired and not thinking straight (?)
Pardon my ignorance, I was really thinking I would hear about A1c, is A1 c not a good indicator of insulin resistance?
Wegovy is the leader in weight loss and it is also very good for stopping insulin spikes !! Source: New Money / YouTube Even Elon Musk is using it. Also Gil did a video about this drug 5 months ago.
What about HbA1c?
Thank you for your videos and your unbiased love of science.
Mentioned HOMA-IR to my doctor last year and they never heard of it :p
They told me they never measure insulin; not even for type-1 diabetics.
I went there for prevention purposes and had a reason to get checked because my dad had age related diabetes (got ozempic shot once and felt unwell). He isn't longer diabetic (for now) since he was just outside the range. I got blood work done due to genetics but somehow they didn't measure my HbA1c, just fasting glucose.
Was done at public health care here in Sweden. Probably need to do it at private for specific tests/blood work.
Thanks, Gil! I appreciate your videos. I think the best test for IR overall is the Kraft Insulin Survey. I don't know if you have heard of it. It actually gives you 5 patterns of insulin resistance. You can order this test, do from your home & then send it off for the results. HOMA-IR doesn't give you the whole picture. You have to challenge your pancreas. An oral glucose tolerance test with concurrent insulin survey is good as well. Quest used to provide this test but I don't think they do anymore.
So basically go to your Dr to get tested…have to say not one of your better videos.
Thank for this ! But does calculating your IR change the way you treat patient ? If so in what way ?
Unfortunately, my blood test only shows fasting glucose and A1C numbers.
First thought that popped into my head is that TyG stands for Thank you Gil. 😄
Does IR increase triglycerides? Is it a proven fact? I mean unhealthy eating habits can lead to both IR and high trig. in separate ways, arent they?
This was so helpful
The TyG calculator seems to be at odds with what most doctors would be cheering you for. Triglycerides of 115 and Glucose 86 puts you suggestive of insulin resistance and high likelihood of
NAFLD
Thanks Dr. Gil, you seemed to have completed reversed aging by 15years, look healthy
👍
What about the Kraft test?
What do you think of the waist to height ratio?
The more single ingredient carbs and less fat, the less insulin resistance.
I've also read in an article on-line that fat on the arms (so called "lunch lady arms") indicates insulin resistance.
Would love a colab with "Aries Terron". The guy's got massive amounts of knowledge, he fact-checks influencers and delivers quality info to the general public. Something I've learned from social media clowns is to not trust every single study AND that professionals like you two who can disect and interpret those studies the way they were intented to be interpreted.
It’s under 35 inches for women. We exist.
