Is Aging a Disease?

Aging is arguably one of the most important unsolved problems of humanity, yet less than 0.1 percent of the federal research budget is spent on understanding the aging process. Why isn’t Big Pharma investing in anti-aging drugs?

My new book, How Not to Age (https://nutritionfacts.org/book/how-not-to-age/), is all about aging, and you can get your copy now from your local public library or wherever books are sold. If you haven’t seen them yet, check out the book trailer (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/book-trailer-for-how-not-to-age) and my new presentation (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-not-to-age-live-presentation/). (As always, all proceeds I receive from all of my books (https://nutritionfacts.org/books/) are donated to charity.)<br />

44 Risposte a “Is Aging a Disease?”

  1. Wow fascinating! Language has so much power in how we think about health and what gets funded and promoted. Personally, I think this is deep rooted in our collective fear of death as a culture. Aging should be considered as a stage in life. Just as youth has its own risks and benefits aging has benefits as well (wisdom) and a specific set of risk factors.

  2. it is likely part of the genetic editing that aliens are doing to us. the us gov is present in alient abudctions. people during abdutions get brain upgrades. about 2 percent of people get abducted.

  3. If aging is a disease, so is being born, living and dying. Eating can also be considered an illness. Why can't we live without eating? Isn't talking with your mouth a disease? Why can't we communicate telepathically?

  4. why us congress doesn't allocate more money for aging research? because of religion. good news, it won't matter, in around 10 to 30 years (most) humans are either gone one way (economic depression if ai and robots don't make it in time) or another (world wars), or solved… one way ("mind upload" or such) or another (ai took over)

  5. What we need is better education for handling aging and death with compassion. Our inability to accept our mortality can lead to dark places; there’s so many horror/sci-fi stories/movies about it

  6. It's fascinating that a lot of people vehemently oppose this point when it's one of the rare notions the (Abrahamic) religions and science agree firmly on.
Sure it's not a dissease but one of the effects of a curse in religion (although come to think of it, that does not exclude the posibility it is a disease) but still something very wrong and in the need of fixing.

It's also noteworthy that most proponents of the "aging is normal" nonsense are quite old themselves or having a mental condition which affects mood.

In any case; currently the aim is healthspan rather than some form of immortality

  7. Let’s not ignore the natural aspect of the lifecycle in any living species. We humans peak in our early 20’s and by 40 are already in a state of decline. Sure a good diet, healthy living choices and proper exercise can add years of quality life but that is it for now. Maybe 10 more years. It will be science unlocking the secrets of natural aging and reversing them who will be the larger contributor to extended life. I also question as to why you want to live all those extra years in an old body?

  8. I am not interested in living forever but however many years I do have on this planet, I want to be as healthy as I can right up to the end.

  9. If you look in the Bible . You will see right from the start that diseases and death originally began when Adam and Eve SINNER. We inherited sin and death.😊 The only remedy is John 3:16& 17. We can die in the waters of baptism and rise to new life and the promise of everlasting life.

  10. Aging being a disease is a revolutionary approach. I think that with all the studies on health and a plant-based diet that keep coming, and the many examples of people who defy current standards of health and age by being much healthier, youthful and active as they age, people may start living longer, and dying without aging. Thanks for the video!

  12. I am a chemist by education, entering teaching high school science later in my career. I learned many things from my students, not the least of which is they were prey for anyone selling anything. Sadly, our government nor (especially), our corporations care about the well being of our kids. I advocated for two classes to be added for all incoming freshman: health (real health – how to take care of your teeth and body) and critical thinking.

  13. I don't know……..the problem I have with this question or debate is that aging is how we have been designed by our creator. We were not created to live forever here LOL! and sure, we can try to retard our aging and keep ourselves healthy, but in the end, we are created to age and die and no amount of research or science will ever undo that….as its been designed that way and forget about undoing it. Is it a disease, I think not, but I think disease sadly is a symptom of aging. I truly wish we would spend more time accepting our creator and working with him rather than trying to undo his handiwork. I think we would all be better off in the long run that when we do research there is an understanding of divine creation versus suggesting everything just randomly evolved from nothing LOL! I mean, how stupid is that? and before anyone critiques me for saying this stuff….I'm not some holy roller, but simply someone that is able to understand that science is great but if it fails to understand its place than its wasting a lot of time and energy on things that simply can't be undone and that most things are happening because it was designed to happen this way. Curing diseases is one thing, but over coming death….well, good luck with that one……as to me that is very similar to denying there is a God. Anyway…….PEACE on Earth!

  14. Ageing is pre-programmed, because life is designed to adapt to a constantly changing environment.
Superior genomes for the current environment thrive & get inherited, helping each generation adapt.
Static genes only makes sense in a non-changing environment.

  15. Very insightful. The prophet of Islam has been recorded as referring to death itself as a disease. To seek the knowledge in delaying it in all its forms should be a goal for learned men and women. His solution was simple as far as the public is concerned.. don't fill your stomach more than one third with food in a given meal because a man fills no worse than his own stomach. Hope this helps my fellow human beings. Health to all who seek it.

  16. After bleep tons of research here's what I've found: plant based diet with lean meats, greek yogurt, eggs (hard boiled is best) for the choline, lots of nuts, legumes, vegetables and fruits, zone 2/5 cardio for a few hours per week, a few compound lifting exercises like pull ups, dumbbell bench presses, trap bar deadlifts with perfect form, good sleep routine, and if possible, friendship and laughter. Supplements: Magnesium, Glycine, Taurine, Creatine, and a basic multivitamin (no megadosing) and omega 3 intake (sardines, salmon, trout, milled flaxseed) Costco and Aldi are great sources for all this stuff. Avoid: high glycemic carbs, processed/overcooked/burnt/smoked meats, excessive saturated fats, especially palmitic acid (palm oil)

Glycine mimics the effects of protein restriction by reducing methionine and homocystine and our ancestors used to eat large quantities compared to the modern western diet which emphasizes muscle meat. It's also the most important component of collagen and is good for skin health. The main areas I differ from Dr Greger… eat a bit more protein (plant based is fine) , and don't consume a low choline diet. Hard boiled eggs are great in many plant based meals. Elevated TMAO levels are caused by bad kidneys, it's only a problem if you have kidney disease, same thing with the artificial sweetener erythritol. Ironically choline will help keep the kidneys healthy if they aren't already damaged by a bad lifestyle. I would recommend "certified humane" eggs only. Unless you buy from locals, it's the best we can do for animal welfare at this point.
