Mindful Eating vs. Cognitive Defusion for Food Cravings

Of all the mindfulness skills, cognitive defusion appears to be the most effective, simple, and efficient approach to manage food cravings.

I talk more about mindfulness in the next video, The Risks and Benefits of Mindfulness for Weight Loss (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-risks-and-benefits-of-mindfulness-for-weight-loss).

  1. Wrong answer. If they are complex carbohydrates excellent for you. For example, potatoes not French fries in oil or potato chips. Apples, not apple pie. Etc.

  2. Any studies that show diet can reverse grey hair or what nutriets are responsible? or is it entirely genetic, seeing grey hair at 28 and panicking

  3. Love how you quote from JKZ. MBSR is very helpful in mindful eating and TNH would be proud 🙏

  4. Cognitive defusion comes from ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Cognitive Defusion is just one of six parts of ACT. A person needs to learn all 6 for best effect.

  5. Ok, so you can eat all the chips, cookies, and ice cream you want, but just chew well and concentrate mindfully on the pleasure of the eating process.

  6. I think this would be considered practicing sense restraint in Buddhism ☸️.

I frequently use this Buddhist reflection prior to eating:

I partake this food with mindful reflection, not for enjoyment, nor for intoxication, nor out of gluttony, nor to become attractive, but only for the continuation and nourishment of this body, for keeping it unharmed, for helping the brahmacariya life, reflecting,
"I shall destroy old feelings (of hunger) and not produce new feelings (of overeating)."
Thus there will be freedom from physical discomfort and living at ease.
Just as this almsfood is dependent upon and made up of mere elements, the individual that uses it also is not a permanent being, not a permanent life, void of self and made up of mere elements. All this almsfood is pleasant as it is, but when it is used by this body, it becomes extremely unpleasant.

    🙏🏻☺️

  7. Eat my breakfast listening to these video! 🙈 but I write down my meals and try to be mindful at the same time. Your videos make me focus on my health choices.

  8. This is ….mind blowing!….I'm going to have to watch this a few times to see if I can understand exactly what he is saying here and if in fact its useful or not…..I think we are all wired in different ways and therefore, this might be helpful to some, but not for everyone sadly…..anyway……I have to get back to watching this a 3rd time….I'm hoping I can absorb it better….PEACE!

  9. If seeing yourself bloated in the mirror doesn't help you stop Pigging Out, maybe you better play this video and try I something new.

  10. This is very useful. A Jewish interpretation of the mind-bus is the soul-body conception of human beings. Your soul is the driver with a relationship to the body that is merely a temporary vehicle for the soul. The body has cravings. The soul makes principalled and moral decisions with respect to appeasing the cravings, or denying them, as ones values determine.

  11. Ha, this is one of the methods applied in a type of therapy called ACT. It might be that "cognitive diffusion" is not only good for cravings, but for all kinds of unproductive and self-defeating thoughts. I've been trying it out for over a month now, it's hard to keep it in mind, but when I do, it seems to work 🧐

  12. Cravings can also get mixed. E.g. hunger is often actually thirst. Sweet cravings can often be mineral deficiency or a desire for salt.

  13. In a society of ultra processed food, it's nearly impossible to rely on intuitive eating.
It's hyper palatable, addictive and advertised everywhere!

  14. I have to be super careful to not be too mindful. I have a history of eating disorders. If I concentrate too much on the food, I will gradually get disgusted by the very act of eating.
Instead, I concentrate on what I put on the plate, or in the bowl. I know I will probably eat more than I need, but I don't think about what my body is doing to the food between the fork and the toilet. Because it's interesting, but a harmful mindset for me.

  15. WOW!!! … 10th August 2023, this channel hits 1 million subscribers!! INCREDIBLE!! Well done to Dr Greger and all the team! A fabulous achievement!

  16. I delivered many 🥓🍖🍖🥓 lovers pizzas to this guy's home during the quarantine! Maybe it was for his wife and kids though…I don't know.

  17. Also the body will send a signal when it needs a nutrient, I used to crave chocolate when I was iron deficient, When I started taking supplemental iron, my cravings stopped. So I don't agree with these studies. People should learn to listen to their bodies instead of "studies:"
