Is there any data on Black (Wild) Rice? Or is it comparable to Brown?
Thank you for your work Doctor Greger.
Are there any health cons to eating quinoa?
I have 2 boxes of rice in my cupboard. I have decided to throw them away.
So much for thinking Whole Foods Organic = Safe, at least when it comes to rice. Now that it's part of Amazon, I wonder if they might be persuaded to post warnings and to switch to the safest possible sources?
Well crap. I like Uncle Ben's Spanish rice for my burritos.
Dr. Gregor, I hear what you're saying about arsenic. But is it really relevant? With all the other problems with animal products such as bovine leukemia, bird flu, swine flu, etc, s it relevant to talk about this? Do we really need to worry about arsenic in rice or create a stir for eating plants? Shouldn't we just understand how to properly prepare it?
Do you suggest just cutting out rice?
The title seems like to trivialize rice for the wrong reason, but in fact, rice is one of the most civilized foods for human consumption. Countries that have thousand years of civilization eat more rice. The real question is not which brands and sources of rice have the least arsenic? but rather, "What is arsenic?"
Organic arsenic:
Despite arsenic's reputation as a poison, it actually has fairly low toxicity in comparison with some other metals, although with chronic exposure there is some concern about arsenic's effect on chromosomes and its carcinogenicity. In fact, arsenic may even be essential and functional in humans in very small amounts. It has been shown to be essential in rats and other animals, though it is found in higher concentrations in them than in humans.
Inorganic arsenic:
The metabolism and disposition of inorganic arsenic may be influenced by its valence state, particularly at high dose levels. Studies in laboratory animals indicate that administration of trivalent inorganic arsenic such as As2O3 and arsenite initially results in higher levels in most tissues than does the administration of prevalent arsenic. However, the trivalent form is more extensively methylated, leading to similar long-term excretion. Based on American Cancer Society, inorganic compounds (arsenic combined with elements other than carbon): These compounds are found in industry, in building products (such as some âpressure-treatedâ woods), and in arsenic-contaminated water. This is the form of arsenic that tends to be more toxic and has been linked to cancer.
Conclusion:
Ingested organic arsenic (organoarsenicals) such as MMA, DMA and arsenobetaine are much less extensively metabolized and more rapidly eliminated in urine than inorganic arsenic in both laboratory animals and humans.
By the way, eating vegetables and fruits contain high sulfur will neutralize arsenic.

So, how do the arsenic levels of other plants look (compared to rice) ?
Could it be that we already f*cked up the whole planet ?
( Y )
I buy balsamic Royal organic rice from the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. Cook in. Extra ozonated water and arsenic is zapped.
Everything is fucked up, piece of shit human beings.
I live in Japan and as you can imagine, rice is a pretty big part of my diet. The only number I saw for Japan was 190 compared to the US's 199. Quinoa is not an option here as it is about 10 times the cost and not widely available. Same with imported rice. I'll try to eat more potatoes but I'll still inevitably eat lots of rice. Is there a way to detox with other foods? I guess I'll just try not to worry about it.
where is the love button
What about gluten free bread that has brown rice flour??
1. Soak rice (up to 16 servings) overnight in big 6-8 quart pot. Soaking rice
overnight will make it also cook faster.
2. Dump the water, wash rice until water clear.
3. Fill big pot almost to the top with fresh water, no need to measure
4. Cook on stovetop, let boil.
5. Wait until 10-15 minutes and check for doneness.
6. If al dente, turn off stove then drain as much water as you can from rice.
7 Optional step: rinse rice with fresh hot boiling water, drain like step 6.
8. Return rice in big pot to stovetop (turned off), cover with lid for 10 minutes.
9. Perfectly cooked fluffy rice (residual steam 'finishes' rice + keep bottom
layer from sticking to pot.
This method will remove over 80% of arsenic in rice.
So is out either we stop eating rice, or we keep consuming it. I love rice, but it's not worth the increased risk of arsenic sickness. Tell the Asians rice is bad..
We're #1! We're #1! 'Merikuh!
Does anyone know what program he uses to develop the video?
I wish I can have the same information about Japanese rice… I live in Japan…
Looking at the comments I didn't know many people actually enjoyed rice. I rarely eat rice, it's bland and barely any nutrients, eat beans instead
Let's face it, we are all fucked no matter what. Its what the eugenicists want.
I thought white basmati was the best because of the lectin content?
Thanks!
What about Jasmine rice grown in Thailand?
Can you study the brands of Chocolate with the highest concentration of Cadmium?
No offense to to the doc here I like his channel, but why do they look so sick??
What about European rice, Germany to be specific
I believ that the "organic" labeling regulations should be reviewed and a label should be only applied if the end product doesn't contain pesticides and gmo. Now an "organic" label is applicable if during the last 5 or 3 years the soil has not been sprayed or whatever with chemicals. That is you could have atomic mayhem with radiation which lasts decades and the food grown there will still be "organic".
No data on Russian rice or Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan rice… no problem. Today it's rice, tommorow something else. Untill we all realize we should grow everything organically.
Most organic crops are grown in previously non organic pesticide land. So does that mean other crops have other pesticide leaches chemicals in it like rice? If not why is only rice crops leaching arsenic? And why aren't other pesticide soaked soils leaching other old chemicals into food or are they? If so what other chemicals?
So for safer rice get Californian rice, or rice from any Asian country.
I'm using Lundberg rice to grow medicinal mushrooms, so hearing that gave me more hope, hopefully this comment has the same effect.
thank you for making this!!
Dr Greger, maybe you covered this before but what about other produce and grains? Are their reliable stats of arsenic or other harmful chemicals infiltrating our food supply so we can make informed decisions?
Sounds like this is just one more food police ALERT that we're all going to die!
Isn't rice a plant? I thought all plant material was FAR better than all meat. I musta missed the truth.
I think I am gluten sensitive, so I have been eating a blend of organic non-GMO grains quinoa, black Wilde rice and red, black, green lentils. My protein source. At almost 44 yr old,My hair are all black, I look like a 28 or younger…. I think it must be the food I eat because my relatives are all look older and fat after 30s.
@nutritionfacts.org So is the takeaway to just avoid rice completely?
You're probably best of by not eating any food products produced in the usa, seems like they're systematically trying to poison us.
Is rice the only grain that's being affected? Is it safe to say that other grains such as quinoa, millet, couscous, barley, buckwheat don't contain arsenic? Or at the very least, lower levels than rice? God…I'm part Mexican. I practically live off of beans and rice. This is depressing.
so what's China's figure at 2:38? (it's blocked by some stupid text box 'feature')
The best rice is Himalayan Basmati rice. With any rice let it soak in water and rinse at a couple of times before you cook it.
Fucking hell, I eat rice almost every day. Should I switch to potato as my staple?
My question is…WHERE THE HELL IS THE FDA IN ALL OF THIS?? Probably out to lunch with some pharmaceutical industry execs again. Did you see that big manila envelope they just passed under the table? Guess what's in it?
I do not eat eggs but have to ask if the eggs also are high in arsenic. my family eats eggs, chicken and rice so I am concerned for them. yes I an trying to get them to change,
And we all die in the end..
Fucking hell this is getting ridiculous. Eat whole plant foods, fuck bitches, get money, pack some bowls and you're good. Shit.
Great videos, wish they were all compiled into one video
Yay! Lundberg is the only rice and rice cakes that I eat.
At the Asian market, most if not all of the Jasmine rice comes from Thailand. Some of the sushi rice comes from California and there are some of the Korean sticky rices that are also explicitly from California. I still eat a lot of rice from Thailand and California. Anyone else?
I am so done with rice. There are plenty of other tasty grains that one can eat. I feel bad for those suffering for celiac disease or who have gluten sensitivities.
I wonder if rice isnât the only food that grows here in the US that has arsenic in it.
I have ckd and can only eat white rice. Are any whole food/plant based white rice brands I could get arsenic?
Brown basmati rice from Aldi anyone?
Eat more potatoes.
"if only they would make arsenic resistant human" =D LOL. Love it! it highlight the consequences of stuff we did 30+ years ago. Everything is going to bite us back in the end. What we do with the antibiotics.. pesticides, GMOs, it will haunt us, our grandchildren, or grand grandchildren.. harmony with nature is the key, when ur home is destroyed, what can a money do?
Fuck. now I'm paranoid
In a recent study on BBC's Trust Me I'm a Doctor, it was shown that white basmati rice has the least amount of arsenic. The scientists carrying out the study also showed that by washing the rice in several changes of water until clear, soaking overnight then rinsing again (to our the arsenic out that was released) and then boiling in a large pot of boiling water, most of the arsenic was removed. It was advised NEVER to use the total absorption method for cooking rice and also to steer away from rice cakes. Babies should not be fed with baby cereals containing ground rice.
âIf only there were Arsenic resistant Humansâ…
Asians eat rice everyday, and most live to ripe old ages, and there's no arsenic poisoning epidemic over there. But if you listen to these assholes who try to manipulate your belief system, you're in trouble. As you think and believe, so will you experience. Look at hypochondriac's, they talk themselves into illnesses, and get them.
Organic is the way to go. This pesticide laden cotton soil is horrible. I use organic cotton clothing and sheets for this reason too, to protect soils and workers.
A bigger concern is nation wide plastic rice is replacing real rice.
arsenic helps, don't complain that you can eat, when some cannot
I just watch a TV show about how its more dangerous for the babies to eat this stuff. They tested baby food and said the levels are quite high. 1. I would never buy baby food to start with, its easier to make my own by squishing up food but still, its sad the west does not care about humans health. Most of the package food you can find in stores has huge huge huge amounts of unhealthy junk. You want to live healthy, go back to the roots. Get in the kitchen and start home making stuff from scratch women!
Australian brown rice is clean
That's it! I'm going to quit rice. Rice has more arsenic than any other food and arsenic is a carcinogen.
i eat rocks now
Makes wonder what other foods are loaded with arsenic and other poisons. Next thing is focus on de-toxing from arsenic. But, how?
Uncle Benâs rice for me. I eat veggies grown in the same dirt. There of no escape.
The USA is breeding arsenic resistant rice because some rice producers still add arsenic and can't get caught because arsenic used to be in pesticides.
This from a space alien perspective would lead to the conclusion the USA is trying to evolve arsenic resistant customers.
I'd love some Thailand specific data. Brown jasmine is my favorite brown rice- more tender than basmati.
Soooooo , that means it's only in the rice then . Honestly I stumbled on to this looking for the best brand of Jasmine rice and it seems to me I don't really need to worry about that at this point ……..
Very educational. Thank you so much!
This dudes voice is making me sleepy
You didn't actually show which brands đ
USA USE LABORATORY CHEMICALS FOR EVERYTHING INSTEAD OF USING ORGANIC CHEMICAL .
I eat locally grown rice. I live in Indonesia.
I always buy the Calrose rice. It's from California so I hope that means it's not that full of arsenic.
Wow, not many consumers realize brown rice has higher arsenic level than white rice. The whole foods rice have high levels of arsenic. Yikes.
Shocking
MTF. Iâm more confused now. U. Suck
I will stick with Lundberg short grain and Basmati rice. I also wash it at least 5x before cooking.
Why is it I've heard nothing about this here in uk.? Well I know now and can make my choices accordingly. Thank you
What a confusing bunch of gobbledegook!
I dont eat rice at all. safer carbs are potato and pasta and bread
Asian rice it will be. I like the jasmine rice from Thailand.
You mean the least plastic
Has anyone ACTUALLY tested their home rice from the cabinet and had it test positive for arsenic? Why donât you TEST THE RICE AND TELL US homie
Everybody knows that Americans are on large scale purposely poisoned via food for decades. Im not surprised. But sure hope soon it will change when this people who do this harm to the people are gone.
Around 7 years ago, the FDA put Goya rice with high arsenic
That is why you wash it.
Wow
Blue Moon Acres organic New Jersey grown rice is grown in a way that significantly reduces arsenic levels ( eg our medium grain brown rice levels were 17ppb as compared to Lundberg short we tested at 168ppb)
We mill in small batches weekly so the oils in the bran and germ remain intact – no rancidity issues. Limited availability. Shop online.
What about wild rice?
Anything Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana — expect the lowest standards. It's a disgrace and their constant denial of so many problems plaguing their states is just wrong and holds the rest of our country back.
If you eat rice, increase your folic acid supplementation to 800mcg a day. This will lower your arsenic blood levels!
Tell them to get arsenic and other chemicals out of our tap water too!
THERES ARSENIC IN RICE????
The safest rice is brown basmati rice from California, India, and or Pakistan but they are only 1/3 less than average arsenic levels.
Okay, limiting rice or removing it is my next step!
You can taste it or when you wash the rice its cloudy after many rinses. Thanks great Video Be well always!
