1 Brazil Nut A Day Increases Inflammation?

Brazil nuts are a rich source of selenium which is essential for our metabolism and thyroid function. But in a recent interview Dr Michael Greger of nutritionfacts.org seemed cautious about recommending we eat 1 brazil nut a day! So let’s find out why….

  1. Maybe it's the case that Dr Greger is being overly cautious when it comes to Brazil nuts. But because Brazil nuts are expensive i prefer to get my Selenium from mushrooms. Thanks for the video and love 🥰it.

  2. Hi PBL! Thx for the video. Well the whole Brazil nut thing is kind of a roll of the dice. I love to get my nutrition for whole foods whenever possible, but it really does seem as if they are an unreliable source at best. Years ago, I read that too much selenium can cause problems with insulin, so I backed off supplements and switched to Brazil nuts. I've also read that the soil in North America is fairly rich in selenium, so we are at lesser risk of deficiency than areas of the world where it's uncommon.

Idk, honestly, I'm highly skeptical of claims that four BNs a month can drop cholesterol.

I'm just going to continue my daily Brazil nut and hope for the best. 🌱

  3. Well…I've been eating 2 per day for years as well as getting added selenium in at least 2 other supplements that I take daily. I've noticed no one seems to discuss the selenium content already found in some multivitamins when they discuss the amount of Brazil nuts one should consume.

  4. Well, obviously 1 a day is not 4 a month. Dr Greger's original video however many years ago clearly said 4 a month and warned against getting too much selenium. Simply eat one a week.

  5. I've been eating one a day too. Logic would seem to say that would be fine if that's you're only source of selenium. So the question then becomes, how much selenium from other sources are you getting?

  6. I believe it because what was I all of a sudden eating in the month just prior to developing an MS lesion on my brain stem? Lots of Brazil nuts. Never again.

  7. I was eating 1 Brazil nut every day and I started to have headache. I suffer from headaches and I really did not understand why, after a period I was pretty well, I was having headache every day, and also strong ones. I stopped all my supplements with no results. Then I stopped Brazil nuts and the headaches went away. Of course you must be sensitive to it, but for me 1 Brazil nut a day is bad. This is my personal experience

  8. I'd like to see the evidence. There's actual research that suggests that one brazil nut a day lowers inflammation even in people with reduced kidney function "Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa, H.B.K.) Improves Oxidative Stress and Inflammation Biomarkers in Hemodialysis Patients." I believe even in the research he cited that inflammatory markers were lowered, so I'm not sure where he's getting this idea. I'll likely stick to having one brazil nut a day unless I see evidence of what he's talking about. Then again I don't really like brazil nuts that much and get plenty of selenium daily from 2 tspb of sunflower butter that I have for vitamin e which tastes great — so maybe I'd have brazil nuts less, but I'd still like to see the evidence.

  9. I don't get it. Greger said 1 brazil nut a day is pro-inflammatory, but the study you highlighted was titled *"Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa, H.B.K.) Improves Oxidative Stress and Inflammation Biomarkers in Hemodialysis Patients"*. Specifically, that studyconcludes:

These data suggest that the consumption of only one Brazil nut per day during 3 months was effective to reduce the inflammation, oxidative stress markers, and the atherogenic risk, thereby increasing the antioxidant defenses in HD patients. Our results indicate that Brazil nut as Se source plays an important role as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent in HD patients.

    So what's the real story?

  10. On a plant based diet, the selenium is roughly the RDA anyway and eating an extra brazil nut easily pushes you beyond the RDA.

  11. You Cannot know if the brazilnut is free from mould or other bad stuff , and then is more bad than good. They taste SO good but i dont dare eat Them.

  12. If you need selenium, the cheapest and easiest way to get enough is rolled oats. And with that you also get plenty of zinc, that sometimes can be low in vegans.

  13. I heard that the type of selenium in brazil nuts is okay. A podcast I was listening to said there was a study in brazil where children of a community in the rural area was getting over 50% of their calories from brazil nuts (so a crazy amount of selenium). They found that they had loads of selenium in their hair and nails but it wasn't toxic to them because the kind in brazil nuts was easily expelled by the body. I just did a search and I found this study: Selenium status in preschool children receiving a Brazil nut–enriched diet. It says that it was potentially toxic but there was no symptoms of overload were observed. This might be the study that was referenced.

  14. Yes, it is true, any nuts are slightly inflammatory, but so are other foods with omega 6 and a healthy body can deal with this and enjoy the other benefits that nuts bring us. If we are a person who can manage to eat just one Brazil nut a day, according to all research, this seems to be of benefit for most people. However, anyone with impacted blood vessels, should reduce nuts or leave them out completely, especially people with food addictions who cannot stop at a small handful.
I live in New Zealand where soils are mostly poor in selenium. But MedSafe, a government institute, states that there has been little indication of detrimental effects. After all, New Zealanders eat a lot of imported food. Just like T. Colin Cambell says, it is best to not see nutrition in a reductionistic way 🌿💚🌿 I always get back to "eat food, not too much, mostly plants" 😀

  15. Holy crap! Been serving 2 Brazil nuts each to every family member every day! Will lower to one starting tomorrow or maybe one every other day! Thanks for the informative video… learn something new just about every time you post!

  16. Ok, huh, kinda preferred my walnuts anyway. Typically ate a Brazil with a date just to keep me chewing. Once a month works better for me…

  17. We also have to look at what type of selenium we are getting and which type is best absorbed/utilized. Whole food is typically superior to processed supplements. Then again synthetic B1 supplements such as benfotiamine and sulbutiamine have had amazing positive benefits/results.

  18. I generally make all my meals,so I gage what I'm getting daily. Twice a year I get complete blood tests. I think a good variety of plants, herbs, and grains can be beneficial.

  19. Need to question how & where those particular ones in the study were grown, and of course how FRESH they were and what was their AFLATOXIN levels???!!

  20. I'd like to know where Dr Greger gets this information from, as all that I read about selenium supplementation is good news, and there is despite the scaremongering scant evidence of selenium toxicosis. : West J Med

    Abstract

Despite the recent findings of environmental contamination, selenium toxicosis in humans is exceedingly rare in the United States, with the few known cases resulting from industrial accidents and an episode involving the ingestion of superpotent selenium supplements.

  21. Omega 6 increase Inflammation while omega 3 reduce Inflammation. The ideal omeag 6 to 3 ratio is 1 to 1. Brazil nuts omega 6 to 3 ratio is 1150 to 1. This is the reason why too much brazil nuts increases Inflammation.

  22. I’m interested by which mechanism 1 could be pro inflammatory. Wtf . Gregor was the one who recommend it originally. I thought . Also since when is one random study convincing . He didn’t mention the study type or quality.

  23. michael lustgarden (a nutrition phd guy whose expertise is pretty much unmatched imo) comes out in his data (he tracks literally everything imaginable that impacts his blood very thoroughly and regularly with statistical analysis thats pretty….astounding) that the optimal dietary intake range for overall blood biomarkers is 100-200 mcg per day for him – above that its worse below worse too…probably good amount to shoot for (rda are rarely optimal but rather minimal)

  24. I ate one Brazil nut a day for a couple months and then did a complete nutrient and heavy metal panel, which included the selenium level (313.46 µg/l). My selenium is on the higher end (range 60–340). I am not saying it's wrong, but to err on the side of caution as selenium is also a heavy metal, I switched to 1 on alternate days. I will reevaluate the situation after the next panel, which will be one year after the previous one. What do you think?

  25. 450 grams dry weight or about 1500 calories of whole wheat pasta has about 365 micrograms of selenium, and I ate almost twice that amount last night. I get about 700 micrograms from whole wheat pasta in one day all the time. Even 450 grams or 1500 calories of white wheat pasta has 255 micrograms. I don't know why everyone thinks you need Brazil nuts for selenium when you can just eat more wheat. No excess fat or Omega 6s in wheat unlike Brazil nuts. You cannot get too much selenium from food. Maybe theoretically you could if you ate a big bag of Brazil nuts every day for weeks or months, but no one could do that.

  26. Because of the variability in selenium concentration as to where they were grown in soil and size , it is difficult to give an accurate dosage for Brazil nuts . Just be sure to keep them in water to remove phytates, lectins and antinutrients . If you have thyroid issues eat 1 a day with seaweed (iodine) and have blood levels checked .

  27. Love all the info. I don’t do anything every day. Switch around to make sure I get just about everything throughout the week, including B12, Omega, etc. I think our bodies can store nutrients. The problem is one day something is good, next day it’s bad. Or quantity or quality changes. I’m truly interested, so I play along, but I can see how people give up.

  28. All those studies coming out of brazil………why would studies from Brazil ………lie about Brazil nuts?
I personally have bag of brazil nuts and eat some everyday, however, you guys are never gonna get just how corrupt this whole this whole system is.

  29. One study suggesting a single Brazil nut can be pro-inflammatory is not a reason for concern. A modest workout is pro-inflammatory. The question would be if one were to consume a single B nut a day over a period of time, would inflammatory blood markers remain high. Otherwise, the body's instant responses to foods and other triggers serve purposes beyond the scope of an average person.(including me.) I think the point of Dr. Greger's video was not to avoid a singe B nut a day, but not to assume more is better. It's probably a J curve kind of thing. I do not consume any B nuts because I get selenium in my multi and because they're way too delicious to moderate. One? I'd eat at least five. I know myself.

  30. They also recommend booster shots lol… However, I have been taking 1 Brazil Nut a day for 10 years. My medicals have always been exemplary. I follow a whole food diet. Male age 62.

  31. I am very grateful for this and all information that you share 🙏
I have ME/CFS which I am improving from day by day. My diet is key part of this and all the food that I eat is fuel for the energy that I need to Heal and to cut down on inflammation.
I was eating 4 Brazil nuts a day but I will go down to 4 a month 👍🙏

  32. Dr Gregor wasn't worried about the shit in covid vaccines, but now concerned about overdosing on selenium from a brazilnut, what a joke.

  33. In addition there's this:

Following Dr. Greger's q&a March 2023 at 38:25 Dr Greger mentions that the radiation levels in Brazil nuts are high enough to be a concern.

His Optimum Nutritional Recommendations on the nutrition facts website was changed.

I guess we need a supplement.

The vegan society have a combined supplement capsule so probably might look into this after my current pills run out.

  34. Was selenium levels of toxicity studied using Brazil nuts or synthetic selenium? If you are taking one Brazil nut a day, test your bloodwork to see if your levels are within the safe parameters but my wild guess says it's OK but always check to be sure. The continuos use of high doses of synthetic selenium maybe a different question but as always test your bloodwork.

  35. Got my blood pressure down. Eating frozen bananas. After all it is summer. Unfortunately thinking that 3 or 4 may be too much. 104 over 43 may be a little bit off. They are so good!

  36. A large portion of our plant based diet is from our own garden. There is no selenium in our soils here. (Sheep growers have to supplement to avoid lamb miscarriages)
So I have been eating 4 Brazil Nuts a DAY !
Haven't noticed any bad effects but what ?

  37. I think I will switch to a half a nut a day. I like the fact that I’m doing something daily. I had been taking 2 so I’m definitely going to cut back.

  38. I took 2 a day for quite some time ( 1 large or 3 smaller ones) and my selenium bloodwork came back a bit too high. So I guess maybe take it 3x a week instead of daily or maybe we get more from our food then we think…But it is something to unravel indeed

I commenti sono chiusi.
