  1. hospitals are enablers, it enables meat eater to eat meat longer and think they're are healthy until they die or need a hospital.

  2. That definitely is not just a problem in the USA. I have seen fast food filled cafeterias in hospitals in the east European country I was born. It included "traditional baked goods" that are pretty much junk food as well . Also recently my sister had to stay in a hospital due to infection of the tonsils , and half the time they brought her junk food. I told her to refuse it and request something else, and they told her back that they cannot, that the "menu is prepared by a nutritionist" . I slapped my face when I heard what counts as a nutritionist in that hospital.

  3. Thank you… I have personally commented many times to staff and directors at hospitals that the food is unhealthy or very misleading. I think misleading people is worse. It's like getting told eat a banana if you have low potassium but that's not a good option if you're diabetic. Just because it's a fruit doesn't make it healthy. We need to know how to eat healthy not how to assume we're eating healthy. I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia with orthostatic intolerance I'm told to have salt pills but we know salt doesn't always hope everything long term especially with the rest of the diet is too sweet or fat. The 3 big points on the bad triangle salt, sugar, fat all play a role in harming the cardiac system. I was told NO to a low fodmap diet because of nutritional deficiencies. But told go back on gluten free/no lactose diet for MS… it's still confusing because low fodmap covers both and attempts to get you to portion control and balance the types of carbs you consume.

  4. In Australia diet is not discussed by doctors or specialist in or out of hospital and is never offered as part of your treatment or recovery, 2 friends of mine recently had heart issues, one with heart disease where the cardiologist just suggested he "should try to eat healthy" with no advice on how too and the other a heart valve replacement no diet advice at all. It's not expected that you are able to change your ways (diet) so why bother at all is the attitude.

  5. GREAT VIDEO. I wish state health coverage paid for gym memberships too….but they won't…for the same reason! There is just no profit in making people learn to live healthy. 🙁

  6. I would like to ask the author of the channel how to eat if you have staphylococcus in your body. in one word how not to feed staphylococcus. I ask many doctors in Russia, nobody knows. I'm from Russia

  7. Fortunately thats not the same and much better in France, most people dont like foods served in hospital because it is usually cooked in water and low salt/sugar/oil, you dont get pizza and fried foods but they still dont serve a whole food plant based diet obviously.
But here in France we get a fine of 135 euro (165 US $) if caught without mask pretty much everywhere except in our house and car except when doing exercise and we are back into lockdown till at least december i'd say…so yeah i wear one short time when it is risky to avoid this fine as everyone…

  8. I wonder the same thing about pharmacies. The pharmacies near me carry a lot of food, but it's hard to find anything healthy there.

  9. While a patient at a VA hospital, I struggled to keep my weight in check due to the preponderance of high-fat, low-fiber and sugary foods on the menu. At one point, I even became constipated. When I asked to get beans, greens and oatmeal three times a day, I was told, in effect, that budgetary considerations prevented them from acceding to my request. As a consequence, I went hungry during much of my stay.

  10. It really bothered me going into a hospital cafeteria the first time (2003) as an adult and seeing pigs feet as a food option in the buffet line. Cause and cure all in the same building.

  11. This summer I spent the night in the hospital on the cardiac floor and the food was absolutely the opposite of what a heart patient should be fed. Their idea of a heart healthy diet was processed pork and replacing the salt packet with Mrs. Dash. It was so bad that I wrote a long letter to the dietary department.

  12. A large percentage of the people who work at the VA hospital I visit are obese. A walk through the cafeteria at lunchtime will show you why.

  13. I just spent three days in hospital and all I could eat was sides of veg and fruit. All the entries were total crap, not one meal that was not heavy on meat and fat. But everything listed the "scary" carbs, even the salt. My type two diabetic roommate had biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs for breakfast. And his metformin of course.

  14. sadly this is exactly the reason why nothing will change. the whole system needs to be overhauled and that will simply never happen.

  15. My husband has had patients in the care center where he works complain to him that the food they get makes their diabetes worse than when they were home eating their own cooking. They have to fight hard to get food that is even within the recommended diabetic guidelines that are still not good enough to recover their health.

  16. One hospital in town used to have a farmers market but inside the building the cafeteria sold only food that would kill. Then last winter they got rid of the farmers market for fear it would spread disease. It's criminal.

  17. I was recently in a cardiac ward (discharged after finding zero problems with my heart!). I insisted in "vegan meals", which was amended as "heart healthy vegan meals". I was denied ordering beans and hummus because they are "not heart healthy" according to them. They had no problem bringing me sugary juice boxes and Nutri Grain bars. Also string cheese (that's vegan, right?)

  18. I was a Registered Dietitian for over 40 years and worked in several hospitals. As a naive college student, I thought I would be able to educate and help my fellow man on the way to good health. Turns out "healthcare" and "hospitals" are just a business, like any other. Cafeterias have to turn a profit and patient food has to be served "restaurant-style" meaning "give them whatever they ask for". Families bringing healthy food from home for a patient is discouraged. Pharmaceutical companies incentivize RD's to push their sugary supplements. This video commentary was spot on. I'm still interested in nutrition, and keep up with the latest research, but no longer in the "healthcare" field.

  19. Thank you for this Dr. Greger!! I was so sickened visiting multiple family members in the hospital after having open heart surgery only to see the most disgusting, artery clogging, greasy and sugary junk food being served to them in recovery. Conflict of interest anyone?

  20. So true…
Dr.Greger, I was wondering how close are you to publishing your book on diet in cancer prevention and treatment? Waiting impatiently for it…☺️

  21. I was infuriated by the crap they served my gran when she was admitted for heart problems. I'd been trying to nudge her healthier and more vegan leading up to this. So I asked the cardiologist to back me up and he said "No, life is short. Eat bacon and enjoy it"

  22. when I was admitted 6 months ago even the meals were sub par. the cardio floor served chicken and gravy and not my requested salad. go figure.

  23. There are many profitable healthy items that can be sold. Its lack of creativity. The standard salad bar is profitable. Soup stations are incredibly profitable. It takes no time to make and it can serve hundreds for a low cost of input and work.

I believe the reason for this is the opposite of your conclusion.

If they allowed entrepreneurs run the cafeteria there would be different results.

  24. What can we do to stop this public health scandal? Are there any petitions we can sign to call for the removal of junk food in hospitals, to get a law passed? Is anything currently being done anywhere?

  25. My wife and I have coined the phrase "end-stage capitalism" to describe conditions where the motivation to turn a profit actually becomes toxic and unhelpful. These and many other institutions demonstrate just how addicted Americans have become to capitalism. Placing profit before purpose.

  26. insane. I recently got put in the hospital for high blood pressure (caused by chemo) and they put me on a 'heart healthy diet'. Beef and Turkey hamburgers were still on the list. I couldnt get peanut butter for my oatmeal, tho, =/

  27. My husband had a series of tests at the VA hospital in LV. While I was very pleased with the service, nurses and doctors, the cafeteria had absolutely nothing I could eat.

  28. I am a hospital physician and have been fighting with our nutrition department for years. Our dietitians are mostly nice people but their education based on outdated information – like human needs 3 servings of dairy per day and other dangerous statements. There is no option to order vegan diet for my patients, I modify available orders as much as I can to at least increase fruit and vegetables on my patients plates.
Nutrition department is happy when I am off service. I will keep fighting. 🌱

  29. "Are we trading the health of our veterans for profit?" BWAHAHAHAH! BWAHAHAHA!! You've obviously never dealt with the VA. Their usual cost-saving measure is to just kill you outright.

  30. I’m two weeks into WFPB vegan diet and I’m starving all the time, I need food first thing in the morning and until late at night! I eat a lot of veggies, starches, beans, grains and fruit and I am soooo hungry all the time! I tried to count calories just to see how much food I eat, I gave up counting after the 3000 ….. I just want to quit and go back to Healthy Keto and OMAD… , but now I’m scared to eat all the meat and fats since I’ve been watching this channel for two weeks…… Please someone help

  31. Thank you. You give The Most Awesome, down-to-earth, practicle, yet well educated information!
Could you please interview with President Elect Biden for a position of doing Publuc Service Announcents.
Your information is much needed to be verbalized to the public. I also get a kick out of your sense os humor. Thank you doctor!
God bless you and keep you healthy and safe.

  32. I was SO excited a few years ago here in Naples FL when CEO of Naples Community Hospital WROTE a letter to the editor of our local paper extolling the BLUE ZONES….Dr. Alan Weiss…no longer CEO but they REVAMPED their entire hospital cafeteria menu offerings! It was a BEAUTIFUL thing!

  33. The truth is we are raised as a crop for corporate profit. Democracy is the weapon of capitalism. In every facet of existence, we are studied and persuaded to consume. It's bizarre, the people that work for these corporations are not evil in general, the corporations become almost super organisms that eventually lead to this shit. The only defense is education and constant vigilance.

And no, I'm not a woke mob asshole burning down buildings and threatening to beat anyone up that does not agree with my "antifa" message. Those people are another crop, for other governmental and social purposes.

  34. The subtle sneakiness of the food industry is apauling. Reading skills are much needed in an era like today to read between the lines of what is marketed and accessible but not necessarily of beneficial or positive use for humanity. Thank you for the videos you upload Dr. McGregor, very inspiring and educational to me.

  35. It's not just about making the food court profitable. Hospitals can sell more medications if they also sell food that causes diseases. A lot of stuff hospitals get away with is literally a crime against humanity, like forcing sick people to eat ungodly quantities of unhealthy food against their will.

  36. Ok, repeat after me. And repeat often: “I need a box of biscuits / A box of mixed biscuits/ and a biscuit mixer”. Listening to you in this addition makes me wonder, and dare I say, worry. Sorry to say that these days we tend to think of a public figure slurring their words as Trumpian !!! Whatever this is, please work on it. You’re too important to slur you your words. The world watches (and listen) closely to background and peripheral evidence of greater truth.

  37. I'll do you one better. The menus for patients staying in hospitals is just as bad as cafeterias. Tons of pre-made fast food style options. Bacon egg and cheese croissants, hamburgers, hot dogs, beef stew, processed foods all over the menu. Puddings, cakes, cookies the list goes on. Sodas and sugary drinks. It's appalling

  38. Same with school cafeterias! However, I’ve been impressed by practices at two hospitals: Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX and Christus St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, TX. Methodist had a great quick and healthy cafeteria among the medical offices: low fat, low salt, but very tasty. The main cafeteria was similar, though it did also offer some less healthy options. I don’t remember any fast food outlets. St. Elizabeth had sections of food types; you could still mess up your diet or toe the line.
    Keep after us!

  39. Last month I stopped by the hospital just to eat at their fast food restaurant. At least they had a vegan burger XD. (It was MOS burger’s “Green Burger”)

  40. Why don't hospitals want health and profit first it's tragic and nhs could be deemed as health conscious as mcdonald's. Trading health for profits is so obscene abuse of public health trust love it stop selling sickness in the hospital more hypocrotese

  41. Thank you! My pet peeve while working in hospitals all over the country is that I can’t find anything to eat! Even when I worked at the Adventist’s hospital in Denver, there were no vegan options! I might get lucky and find an Apple or banana to hold me over. We need major change. I truly appreciate you touching on this. Your voice is extremely loud. Hopefully it’ll be heard by someone who will make changes.

  42. I've just been in the hospital in an eating disorder program, and they have a blanket rule for everyone that you're not allowed to be vegan, and that you're only allowed 2 vegetarian meals a week if you're not on the vegetarian menu.

    Very weird, specific things.

  43. I do not like the new format of Dr Greger standing in front of the video talking. It is distracting and better to have him narrate the full screen. You want the audience to focus on the what he is talking about and the science NOT his hand gestures or him.

  44. Sick Kids hospital calls me and asks if I would donate again and why I stopped being a monthly donor.
    This video explains it perfectly.
I have told the attendant on the phone about the issues and they would agree, but not a problem urgent enough to act on.
Lastly, their justification of inaction is, "like people still get hit by cars though".
Tells a lot about whether the hospital cares more about their patients or getting a profit.

  45. Everything from prisons, to schools, to nursing homes, to hospitals all have these junk machines, it's blatant profit mongering!

  46. Weeks ago, my cousin's wife who was pregnant with severe risk of lost her baby due to lost of essential liquids which kept safe her baby, was given junk food as regular diet in the hospital in Miami. As a no professional you will think that it's right, she's in hospital, she will receive as much care as she can, she is safe, that's all you will think, but with a bit of knowledge you know it isn't the right thing.
We all were astonished, how is it possible that in a risk situation someone is given a junk food meanwhile is under health risk? How doctor's can allow this knowing the risk per se?
What I'm sure is that meanwhile corporations act as lobbyists in all spectrums in our society it won't change; it's in individuals to change, starting with a change in our lifestyles, ways of consumption, prioritizing our health above everything, following common sense as a core of our lifes (mental health, balance diet, healthy relationships, physical activities and good sleep).

  47. The studies of soldiers in the Korea war might be flawed, if their water supply was heavily chlorinated like it was in Vietnam. There is a correlation between drinking heavily chlorinated water and atherosclerosis, it appears to calcify the arteries.
