  1. What about soy lecithin? Information is readily available for both sides on soy lecithin, but I haven't found the studies. Every single bread available in my small town has soy lecithin as an additive. My concerns are whether it is healthy/not, GMO/non, or a neutral additive for taste.

  2. The main reasons to avoid store bought Soy Milk:
    1. Packaged in unrecyclable containers lined with plastic.
    2. Carrageenan.
    3. Value – mostly water with carrageenan and sugar.

  3. Yes, soy beans grows at a farm, but I buy organic soy beans at Whole Foods in bulk section using BioBags and I make soy milk and/or tofu myself.

  4. I consume mainly coconut milk but so far I have yet to find coconut milk that doesn't have carrageenan in it. I am going to try and make my own.

  5. To those of you who love almond milk, almond milk us so easy to make. Simply soak some almonds over night and in the morning, blend in water. The little blended bits of almond "skins" sink to the bottom. Yummier thanany you can buy. If you don't like the skins, begore bleding, blanch the almonds for a minute and the skins slip off by rubbing them

  6. The strategy is to maintain purity of the vegan diet because we are more disciplined than the remainder of the population which eats in an uncontrolled manner.

Resistance is futile. you must join the herbivores.

  7. You and me baby we ain't nothing but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the discovery channel.

  8. I have researched every diet and tried them. On a vegan diet you must do research and learn how to get what you need. As long as I am tracking what I need with cron o meter and getting it, everything else held equal, I am better off without dietary intake of cholesterol, animal fat and IGF-1.

Vegans have a smaller population, and most of them went vegan for ethical reasons without researching how to get what they need or they are treating heart disease.

  9. Actually he is right, most of you (especially women) are just in denial about it, because of its different and socially rebellious allure and fake positive appeal from the bs testimonies. we are omnivores, deal with it.

  10. Dang I love you lol. I was hoping after this video I wasn't going to be afraid of drinking my soymilk because I love it so much. You make a lot of sense. Thanks.

  11. Carrageenan has given me the most horrendous stomach aches, right throughout the night (it was in the ice-cream I had eaten). I will thus rather leave off the use of Carrageenan, in my case. I also want to mention, that I do lack some pancreatic enzymes, which I am currently replacing with a good quality Vegan Enzyme product. Since anyone with gastrointestinal issues, should not be using this, I would just keep avoiding this product.

PS. I lost those stomach enzymes, due to the use of the contraceptive pill – yes, this is what the pill does! The other chemical that killed off some of my precious enzymes, was the overuse of antibiotics the one year I was so ill, after the pill destroyed my body. Back in the day, doctors just gave as much antibiotics as what they thought was needed! 🙁

PPS. Ladies – NEVER use the Contraceptive Pill – NEVER!

  12. Hi Dr. Greger, how bad is this ingredient if in toothpaste?  Thinking that as long as it is spit out thoroughly, then this may not be as bad as say Silk Milk(?).  Of course the flip side is that any can be absorbed through the mouth/tongue/gums making it just as bad.

Appreciate hearing your thoughts – thx in advance.

  13. Is there any difference in harmfulness between natural carrageen moss (and puddings, etc. made from the gel) and the derivative carrageenan, or has that difference not been studied yet? Any observations?

  14. Carrageenan is not for my digestive track. Started drinking soy milk and found that this product gave me stomach aches, uncontrollable gas and nonstop diarrhea.

  15. Love your work Dr. G, but I'm pretty sure there's nowhere in Ireland called Carragheen. I think the word carrageen comes from the Irish word carraigín, which mean little rock.

  16. Carrageenan gives me so much acne!!! Without fail!!! My diet will stay the same 99% of the time. Healthy, mostly whole foods and my skin is 100% clear almost always. Once I eat something with carrageenan?? 3-5 zits, within the next day or two.

  17. Any updates on this or Irish Moss as a whole plant food? Dr. Sebi was a big supporter of Irish Moss and claims the Moss is able to soak up minerals from the rocks they attach to and we can then ingest those minerals from the moss. Would be grateful to hear your thoughts on the health benefits.

  18. Carageenan is an algae not digested by the humans. E407 is exposed as dangerous. Check its reputation. Carrageenan's are dangerous. Even ecological foods have it. Im the living proof of this. It nearly killed me. Diareah and pain in the intestines. Of course the dosis was 1 liter cocoamilk a day with these additive. No wonder i have hear all life: this cacao milk give me diareah…It was this E407.

  19. Is it too late to make a comment or ask a question about this? I am trying to track down the cause of some eye vision problems I have had about 3 times in my life.

I noticed that after drinking certain coffee drinks that part of my field of vision would start to be be obscured by a kind of sparkly effect. The effect looked like the effect the original Star Trek series used when people would use the transporter … a kind of staticky, sparkly, noisy visual effect. It would start out hardly noticeable and sometimes grow until it covered much of my field of vision. This was incredibly alarming the times it happened, but in an hour or two it would go away.

Lucky that I noticed that this happened after I had drank Stumptown Chocolate Coffee drink. I thought maybe it was the caffeine, but I've had caffeine before, sometimes a lot and could drink other coffee drinks without this effect. So I read the label of the Stumptown coffee and carrageenan was one of the ingredients. Since I also drank Bluebottle coffee I checked it too, and it did not have carrageenan in it.

Easy fix, I just stopped drinking the product that caused the problem. But then a few days ago I had a similar experience, but not as intense. I had used some Hershey's chocolate syrup/sauce for the first time adding it to some instant coffee I was drinking and has drunk for a long time with no problem. An hour later I started to get a milder version of this same thing.

I checked the label and did not see carrageenan in it, but I did see Xanthan Gum. So I am wondering what might be happening or happened in the past to cause this, and if anyone else ever noticed something like this before? This is terrifying when it happened because I thought I was going blind.

  20. Carrageenan Study: „PGN (poligeenan) has been shown to induce GI lesions, and tumors, and to induce a severe inflammatory response in the GI tract of most laboratory animals. CGN (Cappa carrageenan), on the other hand, is not absorbed orally and does not cause GI lesions. CGN has never been shown to be converted to PGN in the GI tract (or anywhere) in vivo. CGN is not carcinogenic, tumorigenic, genotoxic, or a tumor promoter or initiator, or a reproductive toxicant, and has no adverse effects on the immune system. In fact, very preliminary research suggests that there may be some health benefits to consuming CGN. These studies suggest that there may be a link between consumption of CGN and decreased cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins (LDL, the “bad”cholesterol), as well as, increased immune status parameters and a decrease in inflammation biomarkers in human volunteers. Collectively, these data support the regulatory agencies’decision that CGN is safe for human consumption. This review will help resolve much of the confusion and misinformation around CGN, showcasing the significant differences between CGN and PGN (i.e. “degraded carrageenan”) that have been propagated in the literature by research groups, organizations and institutions. – https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10408398.2018.1481822 // https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325772019_Clarifying_the_confusion_between_poligeenan_degraded_carrageenan_and_carrageenan_A_review_of_the_chemistry_nomenclature_and_in_vivo_toxicology_by_the_oral_route

PGN (Poligeenan) is not produced biologically, it is produced in the laboratory or commercially by subjecting CGN (Carrageenan) to very low pH (0.9–1.3) and non-physiological temperatures (90 °C (190 °F) for several hours. The resulting poligeenan solution is neutralized and spray dried to a fine powder. These harsh conditions do not exist in the stomach or intestinal tract of animals or humans. In humans, gastric pH averages 2–3, but as food is taken in the pH rises rapidly to nearly 5 and then gradually goes back down to 2–3 as food leaves the stomach. acid hydrolysis of CGN cannot occur. – https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10408398.2018.1481822

  21. Even if it’s organic, it’s not good for the GI. Check your dairy products. I buy Daisy brand sour cream and cottage cheese. Almond Breeze Unsweetened Almond Milk. Nothing with Soy, or HFCS. Read all labels. Buy milk at a dairy farm. Processed milk makes some people sick as pasteurization releases free glutamates or MSG. I am lucky to be alive. 😂
