  1. So, if you use a banana that’s not browning, is that ok to ensure that there’s not interrupting or canceling out of said nutrients?

  2. What about unripe bananas? Is the enzyme present in a green banana? I find unripe ones offer the same texture, just not the sweetness (I make pumpkin waffles with them).

  3. What happened to him? Very difficult speech. Painful hum uhm uhm to hear. I didn’t understand anything today. A big mix salad of words. I could not follow his train of thought. Very very disappointing video! In the end I still don’t know if banana in smoothie are good or not

  4. That study was so limited in the smoothies that they tested.

Additionally, they looked at one food interfering with the nutrient absorption from another. But foods have hundreds of compounds in them, and other benefits. What are all the other compounds in bananas that might make other important nutrients be absorbed better?

Also, who is eating bananas at every meal?

what are all the beneficial compounds, vitamins, minerals that come along with bananas that make the smoothie healthier despite tamping down the ability for some isolated compound being properly used by your body? What ratio of banana to other foods are in your smoothie?

Lastly, the looked at COCOA – one food vs. bananas. Who lets their smoothies sit for an hour before drinking them? You also have all the other foods that might be in your smoothies that serve to block the enzyme in the smoothie. Lots of vitamin C and other things that slow or stop the browning process. Anyone ever cut apples and drop them into a bowl of water with a little lemon juice in it? Anyone make guac? Lime juice stops the browning. In short, with a variety of fruits and veg in your smoothies will most certainly make this a non-issue. My smoothies have four different berries, some tropical fruit, peaches, kale, spinach, beet, carrot, sweet potato, mango. I am not worried about the stupid banana enzyme that blunts a compound in Cocoa from doing your body good.

Studies like this one is how some people get lead into orthorexia as they end up spending their entire lives working to constantly perfect their eating and food combining.

If you ate only whole food smoothies for the rest of your life with lots of fruits, nuts, seeds, grains (oats), a bit of beans, greens and a few other veggies AND bananas you would be vastly healthier that 99% of the population.

  5. Summary: bananas shouldn't be eaten with foods that are high in flavonols (a kind of flavonoids which are polyphenols) because the tremendous amount (500 times more than in mangoes) of poliphenol oxadase in bananas break them down.

  6. I always add vinegar and/or citrus to my oatmeal and smoothies.
Now I just make sure to mix it with my banana or apple first, based on the previous study you talked about which used lemon to counteract the effects of the browning. (Did they test vinegar? Does it need to be citrus?) Given this, I'll heat my bananas in bulk and then freeze them.

  7. Dr Gregor talked about this months ago. Why again now? I’m still eating bananas in my smoothies. I eat berries separately as I have always done.

  8. That is sick, that people are using tax money to research this. Banana smoothie is just a drink to enjoy occasionally, I dont even understand the point of this video.. I drink it almost every week or every other week and I am just not going to get my head stuffed with irrelevant BS

  9. How about adding ascorbic acid (vitamin C) powder to a banana-containing smoothie? Ascorbic acid prevents browning, and so does citric acid.

  10. Doesn't blending fruit and vegetable obliterate the fibre that your gut bacteria need? And aren't the sugars absorbed much faster compared to eating whole fruits and vegetables? Just trying to find out how healthy smoothies really are, also because you typically also use more fruit and vegetables that you would if you were eating them whole 🍌🍏🥕🤔

  11. I love putting bananas in oats can I just heat up the oats with water and the bananas before adding the berries would that be enough??

  12. After watching this I made my normal evening smoothy – kefir, porage oats and a banana. Tomorrow morning I will have my normal morning smoothy – kefir with seeds, nuts, amla powder, beetroot powder, cocoa powder, cinnamon powder, turmeric, ginger powder, garlic powder, olive oil – washing down my B12 tablets. With all that added to my kefir it is too stiff to drink so i dilute it with probiotic yogurt made with lactobacillus routeri.

  13. stopped drinking smoothies all together after i found out bananas in smoothies is bad, always thought processing food wasnt the way to go anyway, eat your food people, as for bananas in oatmeal, if it means eating eatmeal or not.. 30 percent reductions in polyphenols doesnt matter if you are eating it every day, i doubt we absorb all those polyphenols anyway, dont mind the health anxiety inducing information, dr gregor can be perfect, 99 percent of us cant, and tbh i dont think it will make much difference if any in the end anyway, know your limitations, dont end up with health anxiety induced alopecia like me, have some faith in your good genetics 😉 dr g obviously has pretty bad genetics so hes trying to make up for it with a perfectionist mentality, good for him he can handle it, most of us simply dont need to worry as much

  14. Okay I am so curious if orange juice would help. What I do is I wait to put the banana in at the very last and I only use one banana when I'm making a smoothie for two. And I pour orange juice on the banana right away. And then blend it right away and consume it right away and I also use pineapples in my kale smoothies, with various types of nuts, seeds

  15. I wonder if adding greenish banana last doused in orange juice would help, a green banana would be better than no banana maybe?

  16. I just consume bacon, eggs, and sausages. Sometimes, a steak for breakfast. Enjoy spiking your blood sugar levels in a smoothie

  17. I still make smoothies with bananas. My hope is that my process of freezing and thawing out the bananas kills that enzyme. …I get them a bit hot now before putting them in my smoothie.

  18. If there are brown spots on the peel, are not we removing them when we toss out the banana skin, or is the enzyme in the banana itself and works to turn the skin brown first?

  19. So if you cook your banana in with your porridge and then top the whole thing with some berries you should be good? What about freeze dried bananas?

  20. I have never used bananas in my smoothies. I use, dates, nuts, seeds, frozen peas, cooked dried beans, cacao powder blueberries and greens. The dates (3) and blueberries make it very sweet and help the greens go down.
However, I do us banans in my chocolate popsicls so I might try cooking them next time.

I'm open to learning about changes I need to make to my diet. I even steam my spinach and chards before adding them to my smoothies now to reduce the oxalate levels – anothe recommendation from Dr G.

  21. Adding chopped up banana to my oatmeal as it's cooking should dull this response, right? I prepare oatmeal all in one go on the stove, with frozen blueberries , banana, walnuts, ceylon cinnamon, ground flaxseed, real maple syrup, raisins or chopped dates, and a bit of plant based milk.

  22. I think it's okay to put bananas in your oatmeal, as long as you do things in the right order. First I put the bananas and the water in a blender and make what I call "monkey milk." Then I cook the oats in this liquid in a bowl in the microwave for 10 minutes. That should kill the polyphenol oxidase. It's only after that, when I add the berries, raisins, spices, flax and cocoa.

  23. Here in the philippines we have a variety of banana called "SABA" that we usually boil before we eat. That could be a better alternative, what do you think?

  24. My QUESTIONS:
    >what about unripe bananas?
    >what about frozen bananas?
    >what's the time interval after eating a banana before eating other polyphenol rich foods?
    >are cooked sweet potatoes a good alternative to bananas?

  25. "big chicolate funded researchers" thanks but no thanks. Not sure what their agenda is here but also…who lets their smoothie sit around for an hour???

  26. I hate it when people with authority talks about science irresponsibly. When you test for an specific thing, you can only make conclusions about that thing, in no case you can say the opposite effect happens in the rest of the things you didn't test. This study ONLY proved the interaction with a particular antioxidant in cocoa, no other fruit, no other veggie, no other anything, not even other nutrients present in cocoa. It was specifically designed to test that and it only controls for that. As someone that does this type of statistical modelling for a living, I tell you that unless you are specifically interested in getting this element from cocoa, you can just keep putting bananas in your smoothie.

  27. Honestly, I think our bodies take care of it. When I get a cut, I don’t have to worry about it healing. Or I don’t have to tell my liver to detox and get impurities out of my body. So I’m not going to worry about eating a banana! My focus is on getting physical activity daily, strength training 2-3 x a week, being social, seeking to learn new things, don’t smoke, abuse drugs or alcohol, be kind and eat veggies, fruit, grains, beans, nuts and seeds in all kinds of variety and colors. Moderation in processed foods too.

  28. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting information overload. I've been having oatmeal topped with mixed berries and bananas for years. I'm completely whole food, plant based. My blood work is great, cholesterol 123. Feel great. When I heard about this I stopped adding bananas to my oatmeal. It does not taste as good and I don't enjoy it as well. I follow Dr. Greger and frequently add foods he recommends to my diet. At this point I feel I am getting too far down in the weeds and creating anxiety about food. I think I need to start simplifying my diet and not worrying about whether a strawberry or a blueberry will give me better health.

  29. Would adding banana 🍌 vinegar (from Rancho Gotdo) have the same effect is I add it to my oat grist with wild blueberries 🫐 , flaxseeds 🌰 and cacao 🍫 nibs?

  30. Would adding banana 🍌 vinegar (from Rancho Gordo) have the same effect if I add it to my oat groats with wild blueberries 🫐 , flaxseeds 🌰 and cacao 🍫 nibs?
