The Supplement Shown to Slow Age-Related Hearing Loss

Can we prevent hearing loss with supplements? Some studies found that higher levels of folate in the blood seem to correlate with better hearing, so researchers decided to put it to the test.

20 Risposte a “The Supplement Shown to Slow Age-Related Hearing Loss”

  1. The folic acid was beneficial for folate deficient adults, it's right there in the study. If you're getting enough natural folate which is easy to do with chickpeas then you don't need folic acid and it's not going to help you. It's actually bad to have a ton of folic acid on top of natural folate.

  2. I’d be interested in your take on co-enzyme Q10. Looks like it’s a winner for all kinds of health issues – gum disease, heart health, cancer, neuropathy, energy levels generally. With its benefits to oral/dental health come knock on benefits against dementia as well.

  3. Quack, Quack , Quack! Perhaps you should invite Anthony Chaffee, MD, and Sean O'Mara, MD, to a debate. O'Mara and Chaffee look a hell of a lot healthier than Dr. Greger. Is Greger a 7th Day Adventist?

  4. My grandmother went deaf and my mother lost most of her hearing in her final years. I will break the cycle. Thanks Doc.

  5. So for those listeners who are watching this presentation…l have a suggestion for you…!!!
    HOW ABOUT SLOWING DOWN YOUR
ORATION….YOU ARE SPEAKING WAY TOO QUICKLY AND AS A RESULT YOUR PRONOUNCIATION IS ALSO NOT CLEAR ….!!! READ THAT AGAIN….SLOW DOWN….!!!!

  6. About 7 years ago I caught a cold from my husband that affected my hearing. When discussing hearing loss, viruses are rarely if ever discussed, but it's exactly what happened to me. Interestingly, my husband temporarily lost some of his hearing for a few days when he got the cold. I lost a lot of hearing for over eight months, and it never returned completely, but did improve a great deal eventually. In my case, it was like a chronic inflammation of my eustacian tubes. It sounded like fluid in my ears, but the ear doctor didnt see any fluid. It was awful! Steroids didnt work, nothing worked. It finally gradually improved to a tolerable level, and I have fairly normal hearing, but I used to have much better than average hearing. I never heard about a simple cold virus causing hearing loss, but it can. It is in everyone's best interest to avoid viruses as they spread through a population because younever know how you might react to one.

  7. My first intro to folic acid having a connection with hearing was published research about birds. Birds regularly destroy their hearing cells on a daily basis (imagine screeching cockatoos talking to each other in the jungle!), yet they regenerate their hair cells regularly, attributed to folic acid.

I've been taking a daily dose of 20mg (2,000mcg) for more than two years, and at the age of 73, am still a performing musician and composer. I'm the only one in my family without need of a hearing aid.

Several things to note (I said I'm a musician!): First, folic acid is not the same as methyl folate. Recent research has found that the methyl folate form is better absorbed and tolerated than the more common supplement form of folic acid, but I've presumably adapted over the long time period to efficiently utilizing the folic acid form.

Second, the reason folic acid requires a prescription in doses above 0.8mg (800mcg) is that larger doses can hidey B12 deficiency symptoms, including the routine blood test that would disclose a B12 deficiency. I also take 5,000mcg sublingual B12 daily to preclude any related problems; my serum B12 levels are quite high.

Third, another interesting folic acid concern that has been voiced is that 5mg or greater of a daily folic acid dosage may accelerate colon cancer. What has not been adequately explored is the possible protective effects other supplementation may have against this possibility; my regular colonoscopy exams have been consistently negative.
