Watching this while drinking a banana spinach smoothie
Great Video.
How about Potassium supplements?
thank Yah & thank you! I refer a lot of people to your YouTube because of the well presented, evidence based "Nutrition Facts"
I thought you said in another video that it's a myth that bananas contain a lot of potassium, but in this video you don't. I'm wondering why you've changed your position…..I like bananas regardless, but are they really rich in potassium as we have all been led to believe throughout most f our lives or not?
Every time I track my nutrients my potassium is too low… I gotta get my shit together !
"Take our ancient wisdom with a grain of salt". That was funny Mr. Greger!
Raw or cooked leafy greens?
You guys ought to try coconut water, it immediately drops your bp due to its rich potassium content.
I'm a Dr. Greger groupie…..LOL. Another excellent video!
How did they know about hypertension/blood pressure in ancient Persia? I'm sure the didn't have blood pressure cuffs back in ancient Persia. What were the manifestations?
Always take into consideration that if you are an athlete or someone who sweats alot you need to increase your average sodium intake to replace electrolytes.
Currently chowing down on a fruit smoothie with a few handfuls of kale. Plants for life!
There is potassium iodide, potassium enriched salts like nosalt, magnesium chloride to provide needed chloride for the stomach and magnesium to calm the heart, and do not forget selenium as master antioxidant and many other vital trace minerals, particularly boron.
I ate a pound of broccoli yesterday…maybe that explains my ugh exceptional nightly bloodflow
And greens (spinach) have very high oxalate. So cannot consume with kidney stones. Is it safe to eliminate salt from diet completely?
I bet Dr Gregor is chuffed with himself for that punchline
I like the videos faster paced
This channel is obsessed with high blood pressure. Any chance of a video on low blood pressure for this of us with low blood pressure that may be too low?
We could eat more sodium but then that would be bad for arterial function according to this video?
Who use Cronometer and see only Sodium high-level :/
Regular potato is very high in Potassium, but he says we should avoid it -.-
do you want high potassium? dates dates dates.
This video style is losing the important title and date of the study before going all powerpoint scroll crazy. Also not seeing the list of doctors or researchers so I can get a sense of what country did the research. That was always a fun tidbit.
Great information as always but the super scrolling is becoming distracting and isn't working for me.
I use Nettle leaf and dandelion leaf herbs in an infusion to get high levels of potassium. Measure about 30g nettle leaf and add boiling water in a 500g jar and let sit for uptp 6 hours. Strain and drink one cup a day. Do the same for dandelion leaf. Job done.
Eating dates filled with spicey bean paste…
I love this. So enlightening. Thank you! 🍒🍓
You are my new hero.
Great info as usual. You Rock, Dr Greger!
im such a salt fiend.
Confusing message, which seems to imply bacon is fine as long as eating bananas / potassium with it. Obviously not judging by the other harmful effects of bacon seen in your other videos.
Thank you regardless! 🙂
3:30 Cooking beans and potatoes without salt does not sound so good. Sounds tasteless and inedible. Better to eat food that has some added salt, then not be able to get the nutrients in at all.
if i eat bacon and eggs once a week will i die
Thank you so much for the videos Dr. Greger! Keep making a positive impact. 🙂
I love spinach.
1:15 Also are you jumping to conclusion about blood pressure, assuming causation with blood pressure alone. It is the improved endothelial function that allows more efficiency (hence allows lower blood pressure) so blood pressure in and of itself is not preventing the cardiovascular problems. That is why blood pressure drugs, which you already know, are not effective treatments for cardio vascular problems. Moreover if endothelial function is healthy, I don't see a problem with moderate salt intake, the key as mentioned in the studies is balance. Too much potassium is moving us in another direction, too low blood pressure and not enough on demand power generation. Sodium plays its role, so does Potassium.
staying away from sex??? HELL NOOOOOOO!!!!……just eat and drink correctly….aka a wholefood vegan diet.
If lowering BP by 4 points in a week seems significant, research water-fasting. I saw minor BP benefit on a whole foods raw vegan diet consuming 2 pounds of spinach per day for 3 months, but my BP permanently dropped over 60 points during my first fast.
Not trolling, just curious, would a low dose NO2 supplement like weight lifters take have the same effect?
I no longer identify myself as vegetarian or vegan; I'm Greger, Michael Greger (no meat, eggs, or dairy and no added sugar, salt, or fat : )
New Study out:
Type 2 diabetes can be reversed, say Canadian researchers
May 5, 2017
'Adult-onset, or Type 2, diabetes has long been considered a chronic disease that lasts a lifetime, but Canadian researchers believe they may have found a way to actually reverse the disease, putting it into remission.
“We used to think that diabetes is irreversible and a progressive disease,” study author Natalia McInnes told CTV News Channel. “This new research suggests that it’s possible to reverse it.”
http://www.ctvnews.ca/health/type-2-diabetes-can-be-reversed-say-canadian-researchers-1.3399207
But don't we need about 2500 ml of salt a day? I understand if one eats a lot of processed foods, but I don't. As a vegan, If I don't sprinkle some salt on my food, I'd be 100% sodium free. After all, the action potential of the brain neuron works with sodium and potassium. It seems that you're suggesting totally sodium free diet which couldn't possibly be healthy and is in fact even detrimental to one's health.
Everyday we stray further away from potassium
This makes sense but how come some people are apparently too high in potassium despite eating little potassium and a very high sodium diet? like my diabetic uncle who just got one of his kidneys removed because of cancer, he adds salt to everything even fast food meals, but when he went to the doctor for a hernia operation, the doctor said he was too high in potassium?
Thank you for this video!
I prefer your older videos with less scrolling and animation. This newer style of animation is distracting and makes it harder to relax while enjoying your videos.
'When we evolved'?
That's why God gave Adam and Eve a garden, not a stove because he made us he knows what's best for us….
3 years as a whole foods vegan, still learning. Thanks doc!
the graph sort of looked like a banana. just some useless observation for you…
The biggest sources of hidden sodium in a vegan diet are faux meats, many sauces, and breads.
is storing water in copper a good idea?
I'm hearing a bunch of buzz about plastics and the tap water where I live isn't so good either, we're recommended to bottled water than the tap due to high rates of people getting kidney stones said to be caused from the tap water
so
could I buy water and store it in glass jars or copper pots?
would it make a difference?
is it safer?
Have you heard of the product NoSalt?
Ingredients:
Potassium chloride
Potassium bitartrate
Adipic acid
Silicon dioxide
Mineral oil
Fumaric acid
Any harm in that?
OK Dr. Greger, it's fair that you reference ancestral diets for Potassium / Sodium ratio, but do remember that our ancestors of old also ate the flesh of wild animals. Just saying.
A new study has come out saying that lowering sodium might not lower BP:
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/04/170425124909.htm
Sound advice but the main reason for our Na/K imbalance is added salt. Yes get more potassium from fruit and veg but if you are getting 15 grams of salt it is going to be difficult to get the balance to 1 to 10 Na/K !
But bananas are a very poor source of potassium!!!!
I wonder how using potassium based salt substitutes may affect the ratio by adding potassium and reducing sodium chloride?
Everyone in the comment section is saying "I'm watching this while drinking a banana spinach smoothie" good for you👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/751080 –> "The high potassium, low sodium diet of the Gerson therapy has been observed experimentally to cure many cases of advanced cancer in man, but the reason was not clear. Recent studies from the laboratory of Ling indicate that high potassium, low sodium environments can partially return damaged cell proteins to their normal undamaged configuration. Therefore, the damage in other tissues, induced by toxins and breakdown products from the cancer, is probably partly repaired by the Gerson therapy throught this mechanism."
Was wondering if people who have muscle from working out would show a higher BP reading because it would take more pressure to squeeze their arm for the reading do to the muscle? Also if the body is upping the blood pressure to get it through the problem area, wouldn't taking blood pressure meds be adding fuel to the flame by artificially lowering it preventing the body from trying to help it self and then restricting oxygen to the brain etc?
Notice you can't buy potassium supplements.
What about pink himalayan salt?
Correction, 1000 year ago there was no Persia. It was part of the Islamic nation (capital was Baghdad) and that was the golden age of the nation. I know, nowadays, people avoid mentioning "Islam", but, in world of research, integrity is a must.
Is Potassium Chloride a safe salt substitute?
Marketed as "Nu-Salt" by the Cumberland Packing Corporation, makers of the famous pink "Sweet'N Low" saccharin packets. (Over 500 BILLION of those packets produced according to wikipedia)
I assume that some "inteligent" people will start to eat bacon together with bananas after watching this 😀
Wow, this info can save your life!!
I CANT LOWER MY BLOOD PRESSURE . It pisses me off I can’t get into contact with any plant based doctors and I freaking eat no salt no oil Whole Foods plant based. Whole flax seeds ground up freaking daily dozen and nothing lowers. I’m 16!!! I’m thin!!! I’ve taken blood test and there’s nothing wrong with me except I have pre hypertension and fast pulse and I feel weak. My thyroid is finne! Wtf is wrong with me I swear
What about Salt Your Way to Health, a book that argues that salt is necessary for electrical interactions in our bodies and suggests adding sea salt or pink Himalayan salt to your water? I think it has some stats also that people who go on a low-salt diet are at 600% increased risk of cardiovascular disease/events.

Love your videos. Grain of salt and salt free lol.
The blood-letting was to reduce iron overload caused by consumption of animal body parts. It wasn't pointless at all.
Haha how he subtly suggest salt free diet at the end!
That is a real leader! He knows how to guide without shaming. However he does shame peiple who eat meat lol!
I find it hard to believe that hypertension was known 1000 years ago.
Do some research on what anger and emotions do to the blood, cortisol?
Do some research on the effects of no sex or semin retention.
What is venesection ? Old blood out and the spleen making new blood?
but blood letting does indeed reduce hypertension….blood volume is decreased with diuretics… even a full bladder can increase the heart rate by 7bpm
What if sodium is low and potassium is high?
With Bradycardia and low BP.
I don’t want to consume “salt.”
I’d appreciate any help. Thank you.
Avoiding anger is a great recommendation and often ignored.. Angry people make themselves very ill.. It's as deadly as any poor diet..
Coconut Water?
Would this be the same for Real Salt?
