  1. I think many Americans watching this vid may be making green smoothies from Earthbound Farm organic Spring Mix commonly available at Costco…Is that safe??? That is the question!!!

  2. I want to know is it true that we can’t have spinach and tofu together? That caused higher risk of kidney stone? As vegan I eat tofu all the time so I have been avoiding spinach completely….

  3. A stupid trend is the adding of spinich to kale and arugula to creates greens mixes in US grocery stores, especially by large companies such as Dole. At Winn Dixie they just got rid of Earthbound Farms and went with Dole and everything went to a spinich blend. I eat my spinich cooked and arugula and kale raw. Dr Greger should write Dole and tell them why this is not best practice….

  4. I reduced my stone count from 6 to 1 over about 3 years vegan with high consumption of mostly raw spinach. Dissolved all but one as shown in the intro 😣 one small stone left 6 years vegan now. I feel the alkalising effect is important. The public health urologists in Spain aren't very interested in how I cured myself. Indeed every practising urologist today should have been taught this info at medical school 🤑

  5. I got them last year now I have them again! I was told high uric acid and I was eating too much animal protein. I haven't had it in years!. My parathyroid is high though and was on a lot of antibiotics in the hospital in 2017 of december.

  6. You said genetics at first, and then mentioned microbiome as part of the solution, what if it's almost entirely microbiome and not genetics, I really wish you guys would do more videos on microbiome, it is such an interesting and unexplored topic which is related to 90% of our western lifestyle diseases. All that precious research capabilities being flushed down on fasting, chronobiology, skin disease all which lead to no good conclusions and help little to none.

  7. If you want to burn fat and build muscle, you eat your meat.

If you want healthy joints, you eat your meat.

If you want a brain that functions properly, you eat your meat.

And yes, you make sure your meat contains FAT. Meat is magnificent!

  8. I eat tons of spinach and I have a history of kidney stones.. I only notice that I have lots of kidney stone when I eat lots of cheese… I also eat tons of kale, cabbage and asparagus and other fruits and veggies. Lots of salmon and tuna too

  9. Does defrosting frozen spinach help reduce it’s oxalate content ?
    I use this hack daily
A 400 grams pack of spinach gets reduced to 80 grams after deforesting and straining the excess liquid.

  10. I don't have a tendency to form stones since I've eaten grains and veggies my whole life without a problem. However, I did manage to upset the balance and create a painful bladder with cloudy urine that was hard to pass when I started juicing flat leaf parsley and eating raw baby spinach. Little did I know I super concentrated the soluable oxalates by juicing the parsley and then added spinach to the equation. Once I stopped the parsley and spinach and I drank lemon water for a month, I am fine again.

But it does suggest that even if you are not sensitive to oxalates, you CAN inadvertently overdose on them. I know now to avoid the super high oxalate foods and to just eat the moderate and low oxolate foods. You can be perfectly happy on a plant based diet if you just avoid the oxalate "bad boys." Also, be careful juicing greens.

  11. Eat all things, but in moderation, God created all things for man, so give thanks and have meal provided by the Creator, have a nice day, don't forget He see, hears, and knows our every thought!! He sees the Heart,!!!

  12. On a organic acids test i had high oxalic acid 113 with a ref range of 8.9-67 later i did a 24hr. urine test for oxalates while being instructed to avoid high oxalate foods the day before.. so i ate extremely restrictive and it came back normal.. i had 50 while 50 was also the upper limit in that test.
am i a super absorber? i'm not worried about kidney stones.. though i can remember that somewhere as 6 year old child or whatever i once had that, at least i can vaguely remember having to pee it out which hurt. but i have "aplastic" anemia and one theory of mine is that the oxalates are occupying my bonemarrow..

can i somehow introduce or increase the population of this oxalate eating bacteria?
EDIT: i also read that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium do this, which are specifically mentioned in my comprehensive stool test, but weren't present in my stool samples.

  13. please read if you have fibromyalgia or chronic pain / inflammation
It is discouraging that diet issues always seem to wind up being so polarized. On the one hand we have a group that says that dietary oxalates are not a problem and the only health issue related to oxalates is kidney stones. On the other, there's a group that says that oxalates are the cause of all manner of major illnesses, even atherosclerosis.

I know from personal experience that the first group is wrong. I was consuming sometimes ~ 2 g / oxalates / day – baked sweet potatoes and almond butter for breakfast, spinach and berry smoothies, buckwheat-chia bread, beet chips for snack, etc. I was also struggling with what my mother called 'the aches and pains' – fibromyalgia type symptoms – when I got what I think was a kidney stone, dull flank pain and a brief bout of sharp pain, then a rust-colored dot in the toilet the next morning.

So I lowered my oxalate intake drastically and started drinking a lot of lemonade plus potassium bicarbonate and guess what – the generalized 'aches and pains' went away. I'm a carrier for a gene associated with Familial Mediterranean Fever – defective pyrin that leads to a trigger-happy NLRP3 inflammasome; this has been linked to fibromyalgia:
    https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0008480

Guess what sets off NLRP3 (among other things)? oxalates.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4891250/
So its not just how much you absorb, but how sensitive you are to what is absorbed. Further, I would wager that how quickly you clear it is also a factor as well as how much endogenous oxalates are generated.

I've slowly added back some moderate oxalate foods and just try to manage my day to day intake. I feel it when I get stuff wrong, then I check and find out something I ate had a lot of oxalates, e.g., thinking that since bananas are moderate that plantains are, too – some sources list very high estimates for plantains (524 mg/100 g). Oops.
    ~
OTOH you have people who say that dietary oxalates are a major cause of CVD – doubtful since consumption of both whole grains and legumes show a dose dependent reduction in all-cause mortality – and heart disease is a major killer.
    ~
Other stuff that has helped with various pain issues:
    – Alkalinized water with added magnesium chloride, potassium bicarbonate and calcium chloride (brands: Neo, Real Water, Qure)
    – Static stretching (hold positions 90+ sec, not pleasant to do, but it works)
    – topical magnesium oil (magnesium chloride in water, 1:1 ratio)
    – CBD oil

  14. As you’ll see in the next video, Kidney Stones and Spinach, Chard, and Beet Greens: Don’t Eat Too Much, anyone can overdo the three high-oxalate greens—spinach, beet greens, and swiss chard, so for anyone doing cups of greens a day (as you should!) better to choose any of the other greens, such as kale, collards, or arugula. -NF Team

  15. Thanks so much for this terrific vid.  Love all my greens in every form, but have had a nagging fear of oxalates. No kidney stones.  Thank you for ALL you do, Dr.Greger.

  16. I eat both spinach and Swiss Chard every day and have never had a kidney stone…both of my brothers have had many and they hardly ever eat these greens…we are all only a year apart and they both had them start many years ago…however…I am the only one who eats plant based…they both keep getting them and I probably never will so I think I’ll stick with what I’ve been doing…thanks for the info as always Doc…maybe they’ll figure it out someday…I hope they do…🌱👍

  17. How do you make your presentations?, they look very simple and highlight the most important facts while showing the source all in the same time. Brilliant! I would like to present my lecture the same way, any tips on what program to use would be appreciated.

  18. Wow! It shut her kidneys down? That is scary. And to think a kale smoothie would have been highly nutritious and so much safer. How sad. Knowledge is power. Blessings

  19. 4:18 extenuating means mitigating not aggravating.

“extenuating circumstances” are those that lessen blame, not that cause problems.

  20. Thank you for addressing this. It is absolutely bewildering the information out there, even the oxalate levels on charts from various kidney organizations do not agree on which vegetables are highest. As someone who has had Kidney stones I definitely never want to have one again! Do BEETS (without greens) also have the same level as their greens? Is this why Esselstyn says you should boil your greens for 6 minutes?

  21. What a shame as I can't find Kale easily here and I enjoy my spinach kiwi and banana smoothie ! First I find out that using 2 tablespoons of cinnamon is two much then this, c'mon!

  22. While a diet high in fruits in vegetables reduces kidney stone risks, I still haven't seen a study on whether spinach itself is a risk factor. Spinach has a unique nutrient profile, so I'm wondering if it's a risk factor for kidney stones. To determine this, I believe we'd need a study that is exclusively on spinach, so the data about other plants doesn't interfere with the result of the study on spinach.

  23. Beautiful vlog, fabulous information. I'm curious as to whether oxalates are more dangerous for those individual's suffering from autoimmune conditions than they are for the rest of us. Thanks again for all your amazing information.

  24. How do you INCREASE the oxalobacter count in your gut? And, does DAIRY consumption with an oxalic acid meal DECREASE the risk of forming calcium oxalate in the blood?

  25. I've only had one kidney stone at 5mm, its still in my kidney, after following a low-oxalate diet and using a Supplement from Sunergetics called "Kidney Cleanse", i've dissolved the stone in my right Kidney by one full mm, so now its at 4mm.

  26. Greger's cadence of speaking is annoying AF…also he's cherry-picking here as he always does. Avoiding dietary oxalates is the single, simple, best thing you can do for your health. If anyone like Dr. Greger tries to sugar-coat it and pass the blame over to meat, then you know you're dealing with a liar and a charlatan.

  27. So once the oxalabacter strain is wiped out, is there a way to reintroduce it? Is it produced as a response to the consumption of oxalate carrying foods?

  28. The chart that has High at 10mg and Very High 15 to 755mg. The chart you used was misleading and not up to your usual standards.

  29. To eat all your damn green crap is a lottery!! LOL!! Wonder how I have managed to be slim and at good health, soon 70, never enjoyed eating veggies or fruits!! I do however eat kimchi besides my meats and fish!! lol!! You can take your research and stuff it up where its pretty dark….!!!

  30. In my N=1 study, I had two oxalate stones in one year, finally realizing the spinach and chard smoothies were fuel for the fire. The match that set it off was dehydration (long runs on hot days). I now substitute kale, and drink copious amounts of water with lemon. Problem solved.

  31. I had to adjust after my daily baby spinach smoothie seemed to be causing kidney pain. I switched to super greens, I limit the amount, and I have a little organic cold pressed orange juice to counteract.

  32. My story: at 35 I weighed 135 kg. I went on what was basically an Arkins diet without having researched it. Exercised a LOT. Two hrs plus cardio per day. Lost 30 kg in less than a year. Then I got my first stone and it was life changing! So I googled it. Thought it must be the proteine so went back to high carb, moderate fat and proteine but kept the veg high. Regained 5 kg quickly and then slowly kept gaining. About 8 months later I had the second stone! Got scared cuz I thought this might be happening the rest of my life. Decided to keep the standard diet and see how it goes. The docs were clueless and offered literally zero advice outside having more water.

After another 7 ish months of slow weight gain it happened again. Third friggin stone! And again zero advice/help apart from identifying the stone as calcium oxalate.

So I researched it myself. Learned about oxalates (and anti nutrients in plants in general).

I am now 43 and had no more stones since. For me at least it seems very likely that the oxalate is the culprit. I will add however thst if I go zero carb my kidneys don't like it either. Thry don't hutt but I can tell something is going on there. So I have a fistful of blueberries or a small amt of citrus each day since about two years back and that cleared that last bit up.

To me it seems that the best diet is what our ancestors had and they didn't have any processed meats and very few carbs. And up north here, zero veggies almost. At least it's what works for me.

  33. Hi! This, as all of your videos I’ve seen so far, is very interesting and useful information! Is there any way that you can make a couple videos on what are the best sources of calcium and protein for vegans? Thanks in advance!

  34. I am definitely a "super-absorber" of oxalate. I definitely don't have oxalobacter formingenes. Maybe it's because I took a lot of antibiotics for acne as a teenager or because I wasn't breastfed as an infant. I have been following a low oxalate diet for a little over a year and I feel the best I've ever felt in as long as I can remember! I've tried a lot of different diets before (including vegan) but the low oxalate diet is the one I will be sticking with for the rest of my life!

  35. Are there other foods high in oxalate other than chard, beet greens, and spinach? I have seen lists that name potatoes, black chocolate, almonds, wheat etc.?

  36. Hi, I have been plant-based for 2 years now. I did a urinary metabolic test and oxalate was 13, it was high. I eat some spinach every 2 weeks or something, actually, I consume more salad, veggies, and legumes, why is that?, what should I eat to lower it??? Thanks so much

  37. While kidney stones are dangerous, oxalate calcifications have been linked to many types of cancer. This video is misleading… intestinal oxalate absorption is not strictly a genetic issue. I am a vegetarian, but Mr Greger is spreading dangerous minformation here. A diet too high in oxalates can be dangerous. Read the studies for yourself

  38. I used to get kidney stones every time I would visit my parents home. I thought that was weird and asked my doc at the time why I would only get them when I would spend a week or two at my parents house. She then asked me "does your parents have well water or city water and if they have well water do they have a softener?" Answer was well water and yes, they have a softener, I installed it for them. Stopped drinking their water and have never had a stone since.

  39. I don’t eat spinach anymore , I had oxalates before going vegan and anxious to see what my urine analysis says next month. It could be the doom to my vegan plans , but let’s face it , we get old we get sick we die, maybe just eat whatever and die should be a new book. No one gets out alive right ?
Sorry for being negative today. On the bright side I been vegan almost two months , love the food lost over 30 pounds.
I just feeling I gonna get a high oxalate report next month.

  40. @2:30 A study with N=6, ie. people is enough to generalize for everyone? No, this is pseudo. Mr. Greger, please learn of scientific process one day! As this is now, it ends up being motivated _disinformation_.
