Antioxidant intake from foods (not supplements) is associated with lower cancer risk.

But should we take a multivitamin? See Should We Take a Multivitamin?(http://nutritionfacts.org/video/should-we-take-a-multivitamin) 🙂

What about fish oil supplements? Is Fish Oil Just Snake Oil? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/is-fish-oil-just-snake-oil)

I recently covered how and why we should strive to eat antioxidants with every meal in an important three-part series: <br />
1. Minimum “Recommended Daily Allowance” of Antioxidants (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/minimum-recommended-daily-allowance-of-antioxidants/)
2. How to Reach the Antioxidant “RDA” (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-to-reach-the-antioxidant-rda/)
3. Antioxidant Rich Foods With Every Meal (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/antioxidant-rich-foods-with-every-meal/)

Preferentially getting one’s nutrients from produce not pills is a common theme in the nutrition literature. See, for example:

• Are Iron Pills Good for You? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/are-iron-pills-good-for-you/)
• Can Folic Acid Be Harmful? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/can-folic-acid-be-harmful/)
• Produce, Not Pills to Increase Physical Attractiveness (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/produce-not-pills-to-increase-physical-attractiveness/)
• Greens vs. Glaucoma (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/greens-vs-glaucoma/)
• Cranberries versus Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/cranberries-versus-cancer/)
• Prunes vs. Metamucil vs. Vegan Diet (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/prunes-vs-metamucil-vs-vegan-diet/)
• Optimal Phytosterol Source (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/optimal-phytosterol-source/)

Antioxidants may also slow aging (http://nutritionfacts.org/videos/mitochondrial-theory-of-aging/), reduce inflammation (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/anti-inflammatory-antioxidants/), improve digestion (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/bulking-up-on-antioxidants/), and help prevent COPD (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/preventing-copd-with-diet/). So where are antioxidants found? See my series that starts with Antioxidant Content of 3139 Foods (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/antioxidant-content-of-3139-foods/) and Antioxidant Power of Plant Foods Versus Animal Foods (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/antioxidant-power-of-plant-foods-versus-animal-foods/).

What about the role of antioxidants in other leading causes of death? That’s the subject of my next video, Food Antioxidants, Stroke, and Heart Disease.

Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/food-antioxidants-and-cancer/ and he’ll try to answer it!

28 Risposte a “Food Antioxidants and Cancer”

  1. there was beautiful kale at the supermarket the day before yesterday. i was so happy. I carried two bunches 7 miles home on my bike.

  2. Thanks Dr. Gregor. I'm taking someone to her cancer treatment (1st chemo and now radiation). They told her no antioxidants. It's amazing that a leading cancer hospital tells their patients not to eat this or that (all healthy foods) but go ahead and eat all crap. Even when in the hospital, they serve crap (SAD diet) and highly processed. But this is ok. I've been giving her a diet with high antioxidants such as wild blueberries (and other berries). Flax oil, greens (incl juices). The doctors know absolutely nothing about nutrition when questioned. It's amazing. I enjoy your videos with references. Two thumbs up!!

  3. Hello , my 5 years old daughter suffer with masteoditis (it actually only occurred ones after ear infection and after fruits only diet and reflexology for 3 days it dissapired) she has very clean diet no diry products, meat or processed sugar) , is there any natural way to help her. I'm totally against antibiotics. Please help

  4. Great stuff as usual!  I made the mistake of going to a channel where the ND made a video about B12.  I went to see what he had to say and was disappointed when he started talking about animal products.   Of course I couldn't just leave without making a comment about the subject from a vegan point of view.  Well this guy started going on and on about prolamins.  Something to do with how the plants protect themselves with natural insecticides and because of these things we don't get enough nutrition from eating just plants and vegans get sick and die earlier than omnivores.  I laughed a lot.  But I don't know much about plants defence systems that they use to try and dissuade us from eating them.  I would like to know more but…….Yes please could you do a video?  Thanks in advance!

  5. What about whole food pills? There are a couple companies I know that make there vitamins from (mostly) whole foods. I don't know how much processing goes into reducing these foods into little pills, but it seems like it should be OK. Do you have a video on this? Could you make one with your amazing research superpowers? 😀

  6. While I agree that it is best to get one's antioxidants via food sources, supplement are also very effective if used properly–keeping synergy in mind.

  7. Imagine that…the USDA and the FDA has a problem with the supplements industry…and I wonder why…could it be that many of the major Pharma company's CEO's set on the regulatory boards of both these agencies? YES IT COULD. Furthermore, antioxidants as we now know….Uric acid is by far the highest concentration antioxidant in human blood. Uric acid (UA) is an antioxidant oxypurine produced from xanthine by the enzyme xanthine oxidase, and is an intermediate product of purine metabolism.[47] In almost all land animals, urate oxidase further catalyzes the oxidation of uric acid to allantoin,[48] but in humans and most higher primates, the urate oxidase gene is nonfunctional, so that UA is not further broken down. (WIKIPEDIA)
SO what does this say?…. go eat a variety of food in your diet..including MEAT..(Stop listing to those vegan preachers) .and you shall stress your brain less and live as long as we were intended to… thier is no shuch thing as imortality, but thier sure is something we call "quality of life".

  8. Very interesting. Why do we always try to cheat nature by isolating certain properties of even more powerful health properties of food.  It nearly always gives weak results.  There are no shortcuts to health, the sooner we all come to realize this the quicker we get on the right path to vitality.  Thanks for sharing Dr. G!

  9. if they don't work isolated, then what other things in the food helps them work. if we knew this we could determine which foods not only had more antioxidants in them, but which foods gave the biggest benefits and why

  10. Just giving high doses of isolated vitamins like A,C,E can lead to disturbances in our bodies own natural anti-oxidant network & can lead to increase in mortality. Moreover, the contribution of these vitamins to the anti-oxidant capacity of fruits & vegetables is lower with respect to contributions of hundreds of different antioxidants present in food matrix, which act together & not in isolation. MOTHER NATURE CAN'T BE TRAPPED IN BOTTLE.

Hell yeah! This guy made the most sense to me till now. He spoke almost everything that I was thinking for years.

  11. I always laugh at idiots who refrain that supplementing with antioxidants doesn't work and they always reference the same studies where animals were tested with a few really weak one's like A, C & E and they ignore or are simply ignorant of all the other studies on other supplemental antioxidants.

  12. @NutritionFacts.org I wanted to know, as i eat close to vegan and live in germany, during winter i take vit D, and i supplement b12 whole year. Could you recommend any qualities these supplements should have or would you recommend these at all?

  13. Hello Dr.Greger,
    Hello healthy people,
Is it possible to take to much antioxidants??
Do i have to limit or can i eat several gramms of amla for example??

  14. PLEASE HELP – THIS IS URGENT!
My mother has stage 3 colon cancer, She is 67 years old – She has had the tumour and part of her affected colon removed – She is doing Chemo now ( in South Africa ) – Her Oncologist has advised her to avoid any foods high in antioxidants such as cranberries, berries or any citrus fruits because he says that the antioxidants will promote cell growth therefore encouraging the growth of the cancer cells which will be counter productive to the chemo which is trying to kill the cancer cells – This sounds crazy to me – and I literally couldn't make this stuff up. Is there any chance he is right and that berries will be counterproductive to the chemo treatment? And how do I address this with my mothers Oncologist? I am living in the UK – My mother lives in South Africa….

  15. If the only greens you ate were iceberg, no dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, or fish, and only Boston baked Beans, what specific nutrient do you believe would you be lacking? Researching this is overwhelming, so I thought I would ask this community for help for my graphic memoir. This was my late mother who never ate those foods for various reasons. Can anyone help me a bit?

I commenti sono chiusi.
