Genetic differences in caffeine metabolism may explain the Jekyll and Hyde effects of coffee.
This is one of the rare instances where “personalized nutrition” isn’t just some marketing catch-phrase. Soy is another one, but in that case, it’s just about who benefits the most. See How to Convert Into an Equol Producer (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-to-convert-into-an-equol-producer/).

💕
It means nothing to the average person because one has no idea whether metabolize caffeine rapidly or slowly (subjects with the CYP1A2*1F allele variant).
How to Knowles if you are fast or show?
What kind of test shows if you're a fast or slow caffeine metabolizer???
So how do you know if you fall in the slow or rapid camp?
I cant drink it. It’s actually detrimental to my health and put me into the hospital a few times. I do miss drinking it though 😢
Is it about coffee beans or caffeine?
what about black Tea instead of coffee, it contains caffeine and polyphenols!
and how to tell if you're a fast caffeine metabolizer or a slow caffeine metabolizer!
I don't drink coffee but respect you as a vegan doctor
At 6:43, "these studies suggest the possibility". That's the research industry. Do some stuff that means essentially nothing. Publish it. Get promoted. Ask for more money to do more useless research. 😆
seems like anything else than water could provide the benefits from coffee or caffeine and none of the drawbacks.
the addictive part of caffeine is a problem in it self, and caffeine energy boost mask the problem you want to address.
Can’t drink coffee or tea. If I do, I get a migraine the next day.
I have one cup of dark roast coffee a day, that's the only caffeine I have so it makes no difference to me I guess.
No, they do not. I have trouble with coffee even though I love it. It gives me palpitations and makes me anxious
How do I know if I'm a slow or fast metabolizer? 🤔
Is there a correlation between athletes (fast metabolism) vs sedentary folks ( slow metabolism) and cvd on coffee consumption?
I used to drink coffee but rarely do it anymore since I found hibiscus tea
What about de-caf? I'm always confused by such videos because when you say caffeine and then that people were drinking coffee, like wtf? Do they realize that coffee and caffeine are not the same? If you study coffeinne impact give people pure caffeine in tablets or smth and not coffee.
Truly fascinating 🙂
how about decaffinated coffee?
Coffee acidifies the body, makes it leach calcium from your bones, inhibit absorption of iron and b12, dehidratates you. I wish Greger researched all that before recommending coffee.
It's not clear to me what happens if the person is a slower metabolizer of caffeine, but a fast metabolizer of neurotransmitters (fast COMT).
Will they compensate somehow for each other?
Also, the COMT and other genes also influence caffeine processing and reactions from the system. Not just the CYP1A2.
It seems to me the studies have plenty of room to investigate.
Whoa! Almost 1million subs now! Are you planning anything special?? Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this amazing website to us for free and without sponsors! It's an incredibly wonderful labor of love!

Sooo…….. Drink decaffeinated coffee……?
Healthy or not, not sleeping well enough because of coffee is worse for health.
How do we know if we’re a fast or slow metabolizer of caffeine?
The way you speak is terrible. Def non educational.
"Grounds for concern" lmao
Hi doc
How can we find out if we are fast caféine metabolisers ?
Coffee studies are manipulated, too much money on the line caffeine is highly acidic, addictive , dehydrating , and releases lots of adrenaline hurting adrenals in the long run, specially for women, . It was used as a torture method In WW2 , they would use it with people to keep them awake .
What about organic dark roast decaf with a paper filter ?
Seems that coffee has benefits if you like it either way minus the caffeine.
How do you know what kind of metabolizer you are?
Coffee causes me to have cardiac arrythmia, I wonder how many other people have experienced this?
So coffee doesn't keep me awake. Sometimes I drink it before sleep.
Thanks for this helpful information ! It'd be interesting to find out what benefits if any would decaf coffee have for slow metabolizers.
Nice! So people have to do genetically test ??
I delivered many meat 🥓 lover's pizzas 🍕 to this guy during the quarantine while I was laid off from my regular job.
Maybe from now on we would benefit from a genetic test to find out what we should eat and what not.
Caffeine kicks in the sympathetic nervous system, which suppresses the immune system. If you're sick or getting sick, avoid caffeine. 🤧 ☕️🚫
So since no one knows if they are slow or fast caffeine metabolizers.. do decaffeinated.
"May, may, may, may" all the way through.
Coffee gives me anxiety, palpitations and insomnia (not just trouble sleeping or a rough night, im talking about real insomnia). That's why i stick to decaf <3
I love this channel!
Hey, I'm a slow metabolizer who loves coffee- so now only drink decaffeinated. Decaff has reduced my nighttime urination and I'll never again get the kidney pain that used to lock up my back when I over consumed caffeine in soft drinks as a young person. It took me down three times before I really pinned it on the caffeine. Decades later we learn about metabolism rates.
I have found my anxiety and hypertension is worse when I drink coffee so I only drink A cup of coffee when I know I have a calm day ahead (ie: my day off work).
I just the taste. But I only drink one or two cups a week unfiltered. Sometimes I add some kind of plant milk. Does it do anything for me at that level?
How rare am I? A teaspoon of coffee gives me a migraine, quickly. A little bit of caffeine does make me very sleepy. Am I as rare as Greger says? I literally would be rejected from coffee studies because I would get sick too quickly. Anyone like me would never volunteer for xoffee studies in the first place because … we wouldn't want to die.
I went into persistent atrial flutter from drinking one weak cup of (vegan) hot chocolate.
The quality of my sleep is noticeably improved when I'm completely caffeine free (not even decaf which actually contains caffeine).
While there are many benefits people talk about with caffeine, there seems to be a link that is obviously there but hard to prove without massive studies. We know that sleep quality improves when caffeine free. We know that sleep quality affects long term health conditions. When will researchers put two and two together?
I am confused about results. I have the CYP1A2 gene from one parent and AHR gene from both parents, so does that mean I'm a slow or fast metabolizer?
It takes too many transformations and processes to consider this product to be natural and beneficial, even for people who metabolize caffeine. In some videos we condemn ultra-processed foods, in others we look for evidence of benefits. Is the coffee industry doing scientific marketing?
So how do I know if I'm a slow or fast metabolizer?
Can someone summarize the video? I couldn't understand what he was saying. Thank you
Grounds for concern 😂
How do we know whether we are slow or fast caffeine metabolizers? What are some signs?
There is one missing piece if you'd like to put this theory into practice: Drinking coffee black, or with plant-based milk (which binds reversibly to the polyphenols) allows rapid-metabolizers to benefit from them. Animal milk, however, binds irreversibly to polyphenols (and just about any protein, which is why we use it as a "blocking agent" for immunostaining) probably blocking the polyphenols from providing any benefits for rapid metabolizers.
Im scared because I had my first HPV vaccination that I should have had at school but my parents scared me away from im In the process of paying privately to receive the second dose of hpv vaccine I have started losing hair that I have never had before am 30 years old and now and scared I will die like Beethoven who died from not being vaccinated for HPV this is the only vaccine I am late having so please please tell me at 30 I am not too late vaccinating for HPV at age 30 I don't want to die
Cafeine is toxic
Wow, is Dr. Greger so sensitive that just slightly critical comments had to be deleted? Not a good look to me.
What about keto for weight loss and reversing insulin resistance?
What about canivour for hair growth?
These studies on coffee / tea need to look at what beverages are being displaced such as soda and soft drinks. It is not clear from the video these factors are controlled for. Polyphenols are available from a lot of other sources so unless there is research on specific polyphenols those benefits are very broad bursh and brings us back to variety rather than 'our more cups'.
Coffee is Pure Poison.
How can I tell if I am a rapid or a slow metabolizer?
so then how do I become a rapid metabolizer so I can benefit from it?
I can confirm no lie caffeine used to make me sleepy now it works how it should something in my body must have turned off or on
