Friday Favorites: How to Test for Functional Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Many doctors mistakenly rely on serum B12 levels in the blood to test for vitamin B12 deficiency.

Now if you do get your homocysteine tested and despite both B12 supplementation and eating beans and greens it’s still too high (meaning double digits), I have a suggestion: Should Vegetarians Take Creatine to Normalize Homocysteine? (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/should-vegetarians-take-creatine-to-normalize-homocysteine) and The Efficacy and Safety of Creatine for High Homocysteine (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-efficacy-and-safety-of-creatine-for-high-homocysteine).

29 Risposte a “Friday Favorites: How to Test for Functional Vitamin B12 Deficiency”

  1. Dr Greger . I want to buy blood test panels for my children to check for general health and nutrition. What panels do you suggest they get
I am the only one on whole food plant based (mostly)🫣
    The kids 23 to 27 yo, eat…. Let’s just say…. Opportunistically

  2. Autism or ibs cannot absorb cynocobalamin from b12 they only absorb methylcobalamin incorrect choice of b12 causes strokes in this situation I have myself found

  3. Meta-analisy don't show benefit in take b12 supplements and like animal products can increase cancer 🙂

And in general in people that don't take supplements increase b12 in blood increase mortality

  4. This is a perfect example as to why I need to keep in touch on a regular basis with Dr Greger's website. I am a strict vegetarian. I knew I should be on B12 supplements. I ran out. Wanted to clarify which type of B12… Then I forgot about it. .. until my blood test in November. MCV 101.2. and TPO 580 down from screaming high 1146.
My primary doc is not concerned and told me to stop being a worrier and stop drinking. I reminded her that I hardly drink at all– about a glass or 2 of honey wine a month, and that I'm on a wfpb diet, but I mistakenly neglected taking my B12 for much too long. She said then take B12 and recheck in 3 months.

  5. Where I live it's an odyssey getting your neurologist to get you a b12 test( serological)& now you dropped the bombshell that even if it shows high in blood you may functionally be deficient??????😮

  6. It might have been nice to emphasize this 3 years ago before I had a blood clot. The fact of the matter is most B12 supplements are crap and don't work. Standard process has a bovine liver pill that's excellent. Now I take that and I eat fish twice a week mainly sardines. This just goes to prove that being strictly vegan is not the healthiest diet.

  7. I’m afraid to ask a question that may have an obvious response, but here I go. If I regularly consume B12 fortified nutritional yeast (nooch), could that be considered sufficient supplementation? Or am I supposed to be taking some kind of B12 pill?

  8. Thank you SO much for this!!!! I have macrocytic anemia, but my B12 is off the charts HIGH. I keep telling them to test my CELLS rather than my blood. This video helped me so much- I am going to ask my doctors to test me for FUNCTIONAL metabolic B12 deficiency!!!! You are a godsend.
I never know how and what specifically to ask for from them ❤

  9. I had serious tingling in my toes…so I thought blasting my system with folic acid and B's would help…and they do! I wouldn't have been able to figure it out without all your helpful information. Thank you Doc and Happy Holidays!

  10. Dr. Greger,

My wife and I where inspired by listening to your How Not to Die book from the library last summer. We now have a hard copy of it, plus copies of How Not to Diet, the How Not to Diet Cookbook, and How Not to Age. Thank you for all that you do. We have been following WFPB with no oils to the letter and we both are feeling the best we ever have! Also daily exercise, and many of your tips from the books. My chronic arthritis of the last 30 years is 99% gone!  We really appreciate your review of the research, and we believe you have changed our lives and added years of healthy living. We have a vacation rental on the Oregon Coast, and would welcome you for a visit and a free stay if you ever happen to be traveling on the West Coast.

We are now looking for a good quality treadmill desk, for use in our living room. We would appreciate any suggestions on what to look for or any brands that you might suggest. We watched your walking video from about 10 years ago that showed yours, but thought you have probably upgraded, and would have some suggestions. Any information at all will be appreciated.

We are serious about our offer for a place to stay, and would love to meet you.

Thank you so much for helping us improve our lives,

    John and Candace Chatt

    Coos Bay, Oregon

  11. Any recommendations on where to buy B12 supplements from in the UK?
Asking because I've been moving to a more and more vegetarian diet. And in How Not To Age, I think I read that older people need more B12 and my mother's 94 years old.
