  1. Thanks for the info! I was just at Whole Foods and debating this very issue! Thankfully, I bought the flax along with kelp and algae omega capsules. However, I'm still confused about which brands to go with. The kelp contains folic acid; not folate, and the algae doesn't specify the specific type used. Asked for help, but I seemed to know just as much… thanks to you! Any advice?

  2. @richieandmona All algae-oil omega-3 supplements currently on the market are made from phytoplankton that are in an entirely different biological kingdom than the blue-green algae known to produce toxins (such as spirulina). As for kelp, I'd avoid it altogether, you can find out why by going to nutritionfacts. org and searching 'iodine' or 'kelp'.

  3. Sorry, but if you don't want to be able to clear 30 feet square with one single fart you should NOT eat flax. I don't care if they're healthier than chia seeds. The fact is, if you eat them I'll know it and frankly….

  4. I thought the flax can go rancid super easy, but chia doesn't because it has a high amount of antioxidants which protect the oils in it from going rancid. That's why I like chia because I know I won't get sick from rancid flax and frankly I like the very higher fiber. I basically am taking it for the fiber and think of it as fiber with benefits compared to psylium lol.

  5. Isn't flax highly estrogenic though? I like chia because it is like fiber with benefits. So I'd only take flax for the high anticancer effects you say it has. Do you still recommend flax as the best daily anticancer food to take?

  6. That may be your case, but you shouldn't generalize it. I've been eating ground flaxseeds for years and have never suffered such problem. Now, if you can find a paper stating that yours is a common side effect…

  7. Which is why I eat 2 whole cupfulls a day of ground flax seeds. Keeps my omega 3s in balance and fights cancer. AND AS A BONUS I have super smooth bowl movements because of all that fiber!! They even taste pretty good almost chocolaty if you have a clean natural palette.

  8. Hmmm, incredible? Well, if everyone's going to lie how can we know anything. That's not fair! So, what is the dose of flax that we need to take daily, if I might ask?

  9. I also "thought" I heard something somewhere that chia has a better balance of omega 3's and omega 6's – and that was supposed to be important? Huh?

I am OK and would prefer to be more vegetarian or vegan in my diet, but it is exactly this kind of uncertainty that makes me wary of jumping into anything 1000%

Also, other "doctors" on the net say that the body stores B12 so that you do not run out of it for a long time? What the heck??

  10. I see he doesn't respond to the questions so i will.. Flax can be kept in a freezer or a cool dark place/dry like red wine. A closed Wicker basket for example or cabinet. Also Chia seeds contain similar amounts but also sweeps out the intestines so it could be a better option if that's what you need! Flax is NOT toxic! Yes it can become gooie when mixed with water but that makes it all the BETTER when baking! But its not starchy it needs starch to bind to, like while what flour or oatmeal.

  11. @ Amy Neville: It's difficult to believe you consume 2 C./flax per day–incredible, as a matter of fact. That would total (according to the USDA nutrition page) 91.8 grams of fiber. Yes, fiber is good, but that amount day after day after day would very likely cause you intestinal problems. (Also see my response to Clyde Rembrandt for clarifying information.)

  12. Why only analyze 3 components and based on that decide what is healthy? Food is a matrix of nutrient and phitochemicals it is not only those mentioned that are protective to our body. It is impossible to decide which one is healthy based on 3 compounds only. Both seeds should be used frequently.

  13. That's a relief!  Not only do flaxseeds taste better (in my opinion, I find chia seeds bland) but are a lot cheaper too.  Chia seeds are an arm and a leg these days.

  14. I wouldn't say something is healthier based on a few tested factors. which is healthier an apple or an orange? vitamin A or vitamin C? i believe they are equally as healthy and it all depends on which factor you are measuring to say one is above the other in that specific factor.

  15. Ill just eat both. But i feel that since i stopped adding grounded flaxseed to my porridge, my stomach is in a better mood. I have also heard that you need to heat flax seeds, to get rid of some toxins, is that true?

  16. i use both…great for me and my pet. however, chia realky suppresses the appetite. its cut out my snacking. now i do intermittent fasting and adding chia seeds to my water or green drink makes it easier for weight. i even add chia seeds to my dogs water and food.

  17. Flax is healthier from the standpoint of lignans. But the elephant in the room is that its known to contain cadmium. Please address this?
