19 Risposte a “Sugar vs. Corn Syrup”

  1. why?? cane sugar is refined and bleached.. they both seem ok in moderation. i'm a bit skeptical on the mercury thing. i'm surprised nothing has been said about mercury in hfcs before. i definitely need to cut down on sugar, period. i'm so hooked. it's like a drug!!

  2. HFCS=high-fructose corn syrup, ZFCS=zero-fructose corn syrup (like Karo-brand light-colored corn syrup in the US). In both cases, the rest of the sugar in the product is glucose. For example, ZFCS is 100% glucose. HFCS-42 is 42% fructose and 58% glucose. Table sugar is 50% fructose and 50% glucose.

Now, getting to the point: The more fructose in a sugar mix, the worse it is for your body, assuming every other condition is equal.

ZFCS (0% fructose) is less bad than HFCS-42 (42% fructose) is less bad than table-sugar (50% fructose) is less bad than HFCS-55 (55% fructose) in terms of the bad effects of humans consuming these products, gram-for-gram.

However, they are all sugars, and they are all bad for you beyond a small required level of consumption. Does that clear it up? But fructose is worse than glucose, because it is metabolized (converted to usable energy , or to fat) in the liver, and stresses and fattens the liver, whereas glucose can be metabolized (burned) directly in muscles. There is a ton more details to it than what I write here, but this is the essence of it.

The video is confusing because the syrup bottle shown is a ZFCS, and not a HFCS. It is wrong to equate the table sugar on the left with the ZFCS on the right in terms of bodily badness. Adding more confusion, the video then uses a glass of Cola (soda) to symbolize HFCS.

  3. Let me ask you something, would you rather eat a sugar cube or a table spoon of corn syrup? Sugar is not nearly as bad for you in soda compared to corn syrup.

  4. When their equally bad. Why does europe change up the ingredients? I mean, stuff like Mountain Dew gets sold here, but you never read anything about corn syup or its synonyme on the label
