DESCRIPTION: Plant-based diets tend to be alkaline-forming. This may help protect muscle mass and reduce the risk of gout and kidney stones. The pH of one’s urine can be estimated with natural pigments using kitchen chemistry.
Now I have low-flow toilet, so there’s very little water in the bowel to start with. The effect might not be as dramatic if diluted in a larger quantity of water. More bathroom chemistry can be found in Pretty in Pee-nk (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/pretty-in-pee-nk/) and Asparagus Pee (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/asparagus-pee/).<
What does acid have to do with bones? You might have missed the prequel to this video, Alkaline Diets, Animal Protein, & Calcium Loss (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/alkaline-diets-animal-protein-and-calcium-loss).
How else can we protect our muscles? We can eat healthy enough to avoid statin drugs (see Statin Muscle Toxicity, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/statin-muscle-toxicity/) and the neurotoxins that can cause movement disorders (Muscle Tremors & Diet, http://nutritionfacts.org/video/muscle-tremors-diet/).
Superfood Bargains (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/superfood-bargains-2/) is the video in which purple cabbage takes the gold, though it was unseated in Biggest Nutrition Bang for Your Buck (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/biggest-nutrition-bang-for-your-buck/).
Why do I always go on and on about dark green leafy vegetables? Check out my 58 videos on greens (http://nutritionfacts.org/topics/greens/) and find out!
Have a question for Dr. Greger about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/testing-your-diet-with-pee-purple-cabbage/ and he’ll try to answer it!

I just love this guy's voice.
Pee in the blender. Ta Da!
mine went blue too =) fruit and veg forever
The lil kid in me just can't wait to try this!
The saying "You learn something new everyday" was never truer. I can't wait to try this!
No color change for me.ย I eat 1-2 pounds of dark green leaves per week for 10 years.
I've GOT to try this! ๐
Everyone has the priceless ability to bulk up–but very few actually use it. Go Google ย Morsch Muscle Madness and discover how to utilize your gift.
OK, this was really interesting, so I decided to try it. Instead of using cabbage, I simply used a PH tester, took a sample of my urine, and tested it. The color turned out orange-ish. I do not see that color on this video's spectrum. The PH tester indicated this was in the 5 range, yet this video indicates 5 should be a pink color. According to this video, the orange color exhibited most closely resembles the 11 range. I am thoroughly confused. Can anyone shed light?
To further complicate matters, the PH tester I am using indicates 6 should be a solid yellow color, not purple. Anyone?
woww this is a keeper!ย
Okay I tried this and have a question.ย How much (volume) of the purple cabbage water do you pour into the urine?ย First time, I poured so much it just stayed dark purple. 1 cup? 1/2 cup?
AWESOME!
Why can't he narrate in a matter-of-fact tone instead of attempting to sound melodramatic? ย It is off-putting. I rather read the text if there's the alternative.
Forget the kids …. I will have a lot of fun testing this out!
BUT … yes, what are the proportions, how much cabbage juice to how much urine?
But Dude, what about all the farting that happens when you make everybody eat vegetables? A room filled with feasting vegetarians needs a WALL of windows – all open!
It's hard to believe that a diet which so obviously upsets the average stomach can be so superior to a meat-inclusive diet. Do Vegetarians really live longer – or do they just smell old?
The best way to do this test is to pee in a cup and pour a small amount of the cabbage juice into the cup. It turned blue when I did it. I tried this with some vinegar to see if it would turn pink, it did. this test worked great for me, everyone should try this.
that's awesome, I'm so trying this little experiment…
I like it when Dr Greger says "gorgeous purple".
Totally doing this for myself and fun science experiment for the kids!ย
One problem with this test is: How much of the liquid do we pour in? All of it? sum of it? bit by bit?ย
Does this mean that i drink the water from the boiled purple cabbage? I want to have some fun with my doctor the next time she asks for a urine sample heh heh heh heh ๐
Time to blend some purple cabbage… For Science!!!
"You should use what you probably have right now in your crisper….. purple cabbage."
You don't know me! You don't know what's in my crisper drawer! checks crisper drawer God damnit! Are you a wizard or something?
Yay I peed blue! Look's like a 7.5er to me
Will it work if I pee straight in the saucepan while it's boiling?
superlike
Fantastic video thank you so much!
loved this, i tried it and it was sky blue (and i eat quite a lot of animal protein, like 180 g beef steak before this test)
Since women have less muscle mass to spend treating acidosis with aging and are more prone to bone loss after 40 is it possible that the theory is correct on women only? Has any study been done only on women?
So eating alkaline foods will increase Serum alkaline levels too ?ย From what I'm gathering this only increase urine and saliva.
Omg I want to try! Vegan almost one year and vegetarian before that so I should have some decent results.
nice lifehack Dr. G! last year i had uric acid showing in my general medical analysis. ive been vegan for the past 6 months and im curious to see where i stand now ๐ time to pee!!
OMG im buying a cabbage tomorrow! I'm vegan and the rest of my family eats meat and my parents are doctors. i hope we can all do this and see the results!
gotta try the purple cabbage. Fiber
Amino acids found in meat such as arginine are also used to excrete uric acid from the body =/
looks like peanuts are quite acidic
Yes.
Does it work with Chicoree too? It's got the same color.
I will eat the purple cabbage, and pee on the litmus paper.
great info, but the video its soo borring
i eat a lot of Beetroot so my urin is often slightly pink in color
Ooooh ! I know what to do with my homemade natural food colouring that I forgot in the fridge for months !!
What if your pee goes dark blue like a 10. Are you then too alkaline and how do we fix this?
Im about to go try this Il let you know what color my urine was!
So… blue pee is good?
Wouldn't you want your urine to be acidic. Metabolic processes produce acidic waste which are filtered out through the kidneys. If urine is acidic that means you are getting rid of acids. If it is base, you are not filtering properly and are holding acidic waste. Is my logic flawed?
very interesting…will absolutely try this…
love your videos ๐
It was between an 8 and a 9, is that good?
I'd love to do this science experiment but I can't stand the thought of wasting a beautiful piece of cabbage.
Maybe we can just pee on the whites of the cabbage
I peed straight into my blender! Is it ok?
Why kids? I'm havin' a blast just hearing about it on here! LOL! Can't wait to buy my red cabbage first thing tomorrow! :)))
LOVE this. Where I live I can't buy litmus paper and was searching madly on the internet how to figure out the pH of urine else-wise. And voila! there you were. Going to try it today. PS: I always have purple cabbage in the crisper. PPS: Heard about you from the magnificent Kris Carr.
Any thoughts on using baking soda to increase your body's alkaline level?
Never thought the day would come where I'd buy a red cabbage, blend it and pee on it. First time for everything I guess…
So does the current ph of the water in toilet or tap matter? I think our water is 8.2
How much purple cabage do I have to eat for my pee to naturally be blue? That is the real question.
But I read that, when your gut gets too alkaline your reabsorption of ammoniak isveryhigh, wich causes numerus side effeckts, thats why i stopped taking basic powder in the morning, didnยดt feel well afterwards. also donยดt most good gut bakteria prefer slightly acidic ph levels ?
You are awesome. God bless you.
Dark blue for me!
I like this. I eat keto, but with lots of vegetables. In fact, every day we have red cabbage on the dinner table, we eat it raw (mixed with a little bit of maio.)
This will be a fun experiment.
What if your urine is clear or mostly clear? Isn't that an indication of ph balance?
Has anyone found the most comprehensive food guide pH scale/chart/thing online?
lol
Can I boil it in the toilet bowl using a sous-vide method then pee in it?
if ur pee is alcaline
u r doing something wrong
it needs to feel like (at least diluted) vinegar so u know they r filtering lymph
otherwise u r holding onto a lot of gunk
VEG bs
What if your water is very alkaline, wouldn't that affect results?
In any case… Just eat dark green leafy veggies and all will be good.
Quorn is vegetarian not vegan (it has egg in it!).
Yaay, experiment time ๐๐๐๐
8 or 9 to my eyes. Happy ๐
that was fun to do .
That method of pH measurement is pretty fascinating : D
Love this science expermentโฅ๏ธ I love purple cabbage๐ I eat it all the time in Marcus recipes Spicy Tye Cabbage, book love on a plate, inspired by Cara Brotman๐๐๐๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ต๐ฅ
What about green? Hahah
Oh yeah, the kids are going to have a blast with this one!
What if you eat dark green leafy veggies, red cabbage, hot chillies, vinegar, beets, and orange turmeric… I guess the pee test will fail because of the pigments in those plants.
Not to be gross, but my urine is always orange and red despite excellent hydration because of all the pigmented veggies I eat…
If I'm ever deprived of those veggies, my urine is clear with my typical level of hydration.
It sounds like it is not worth it purchasing a really expensive water filtration system like Kangen water if we can just eat our leafy greens and our bodies should be okay with alkalizing our bodies right?
Since I want to test daily, for a while, can I just put some purple juice from cabbage in a glass cup and pee in it? What should the ratio of pee to cabbage liquid be? OK to store the rest of the liquid in the fridge? For how long? THANKS!
I am colorblind… Please help. (:
I get at least 1 cup of cooked green leafy vegetables a day (so like 2 cups raw I guess) plus loads of other veggies both cooked and raw, lots of fruit/whole grains/legumes too so why is my water staying like the 6? ๐ too much protein? ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ
Thanks so much for this
But won't the PH of your water affect the results? Ours is quite hard and alkaline.
Great info, thanks.
I love purple cabbage but I'm afraid it contains lectins and oxalate, to both of which I'm very sensitive. Please does anyone know anything about that (whether it really contains oxalate)?
What a fascinating sciencefest for one to do for health reasons. So pH in this case means โpee Hueโ, right? lol. ๐๐
Thanks Dr Greger for your great videos๐ค Q-What's your opinion about sauerkraut form Red Cabbage? Thanks for your answer๐
Can't wait to try it thank you Dr. McGregor!!
Cool
Does our blood really get more acidic as we age or were those all people eating garbage (S.A.D.)? Do we have a column for people only eating whole plant foods yet?
I couldn't find any confirmation that Quorn actually has a renal acid load of 7.8 anywhere on the web. According to Cronometer, it's PRAL is about 2, which is about the same as full-fat cow's milk, but is higher than other fungi that vegetarians or vegans eat (-2.2 generally). The Vegan Quorn items are listed as having a PRAL of over 7, but that's because the data about minerals other than sodium are missing. So I suspect something is wrong with the quoted figures.
So I went to store and say…"Where can I find this pee and purple cabbage?"
Lol, I may try this.
Deep Purple. Hehe hehe. Dun dun dunn, dun dun dun dunn. ๐ค๐ธ๐ต๐ถ
I prefer to be boring. If I eat enough leafy green vegetables (which I know I don't) what should my morning urine pH be with pH test paper?
I guess my cabbage isn't organic mine was blue turned purple when I peed on it.
So if your urine is the other extreme at #11 yellow, should you go easy on the dark greens and pick up some meat maybe?
Dr sebi was right.
